Moviegoers have a lot to look forward to with numerous sequels and remakes on the way, and some are generating more buzz than others. A new Resident Evil film, directed by the creator of Weapons, is set to release in 2026 and has fans particularly thrilled. December of the same year will bring two major sequels: the next Avengers installment, titled Avengers: Doomsday, and the third Dune film by Denis Villeneuve. Looking ahead to 2027, Avengers: Secret Wars is poised to be a huge event, but another sequel recently received some promising production updates and is also generating excitement.
Director Dean DeBlois announced the start of production for How to Train Your Dragon 2 on his X account (formerly Twitter). He shared a photo of himself with the film’s clapboard, marking the first day of shooting. He wrote, “Back in the saddle! Day 1 of principal photography on HTTYD2! The adventure begins.”
Dean DeBlois has a long history with the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. He directed the original animated film in 2010, co-directed the first live-action movie, and was the sole director for both How to Train Your Dragon 2 and the final installment, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. Bringing him back to direct the live-action remakes was a natural fit.
The initial live-action movie earned $636.4 million despite costing $150 million to produce, and it received a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. What really stood out, though, was how much fans enjoyed it – a group often critical of remakes, especially live-action adaptations of animated films. The first How to Train Your Dragon live-action remake has earned a 97% audience score from over 10,000 ratings, earning it a “Certified Hot” designation.
Cate Blanchett Reprising How to Train Your Dragon 2 Role
As a huge fan, I was so thrilled Dean DeBlois brought Gerard Butler back for the live-action remake to play Stoick! It meant a lot to see the original voice of Hiccup’s dad return to the role, even if they couldn’t get all the original kid voice actors. Honestly, Gerard Butler is Stoick – he just perfectly embodies that strong Viking warrior vibe.
Dean DeBlois is bringing back Cate Blanchett to reprise her role as Valka, Hiccup’s mother, who was revealed to be alive in the second film. Like Gerard Butler, Blanchett originally voiced the character in the animated movies. Following the success of the first film and its faithful adaptation of the original’s heart, How to Train Your Dragon 2 is shaping up to be a highly anticipated sequel for 2027.
