Joseph Quinn’s new horror movie, A Quiet Place: Day One, is surprisingly popular on Paramount+. After gaining fame for his role as Eddie Munson in Stranger Things season four, Quinn has quickly become a well-known actor, landing a significant part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and agreeing to play George Harrison in a series of four films.
Before Stranger Things concluded, many fans speculatedāand wishedāthat Eddie Munson would reappear as Kas the Betrayer, Vecnaās right-hand man, in the final season. While that didn’t happenāit would have diminished the impact of his heroic death in season fourāthe actor who played Eddie, Joseph Quinn, returned to the horror genre in a surprisingly sweet prequel to A Quiet Place.
A Quiet Place: Day One Was A Sleeper Hit At The Box Office
Okay, so I was really surprised by how well A Quiet Place: Day One did. It made $261 million worldwide, which is huge when you consider it didn’t have any of the original cast! We’ve seen spin-offs like Solo: A Star Wars Story and Furiosa totally flop, so I honestly expected this one to struggle too. It didn’t quite reach the numbers of the first two Quiet Place movies, but it definitely turned a profit, and I think thatās a win.
A major issue with the prequel film was its marketing campaign. While the trailers were exciting, they didn’t accurately reflect the actual movie. The promotion for A Quiet Place: Day One suggested a relentlessly intense action film. However, director Michael Sarnoski, known for Pig, crafted a film thatās more of a quiet, emotional love story set against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic world, rather than a straightforward thriller.
A Quiet Place: Day One Delivers An Unexpectedly Tender Post-Apocalyptic Thriller
Lupita Nyongāo leads A Quiet Place: Day One as Sam, a woman facing a serious illness who finds herself in New York City when the alien invasion begins. The movie starts with the large-scale action and destruction you’d expect ā car accidents, panicked crowds, and the military trying to respond. However, it quickly shifts to a more serious and reflective tone.
People in New York quickly realize the aliens can’t see, but they have incredibly sensitive hearing, so everyone tries to stay silent and avoid the chaos. From there, A Quiet Place: Day One becomes the story director Michael Sarnoski truly wanted to tell: a drama focused on relationships, set in a dark and devastated world.
Quinn plays Eric, a law student who teams up with Sam to try and make it through an alien invasion. Eric is understandably scared, but Sam is surprisingly calm, as she already knew she didnāt have long to live. Because of this, A Quiet Place: Day One isnāt really about surviving the end of the worldāitās a sweet love story, similar to The Fault in Our Stars, about two people making the most of their time together.
