Highguard Doesn’t Do a Concord, But Reception Is Lukewarm

As we previously mentioned in our “Highguard Hands On” article, Highguard is now a reality! After over a month of anticipation, the new player-versus-player raid shooter launched on PS5 yesterday, alongside a developer presentation detailing the game.

Will it still be around in a year or two, though?

Many ongoing online games struggle with maintaining a player base, so the big question is how well they’re doing. Fortunately for Wildlight Entertainment, their game is performing much better than Concord. While exact numbers on PlayStation 5 aren’t available, the game reached a peak of 97,249 players simultaneously on the Steam platform when it first launched.

I was really excited to jump into the game at launch, and it definitely had a lot of people playing thanks to being free-to-play. But honestly, the reviews haven’t been great. Right now, the PS5 version is sitting around a 3.11 out of 5, and it’s wild – people either seem to love it or absolutely hate it, with almost the same number of 1-star and 5-star ratings.

So, I’ve been checking out the Steam reviews, and it’s not looking great. Over 14,000 people have left “mostly negative” reviews, and a lot of the complaints are about the maps being way too big. Plus, they went with 3v3 teams, which just makes the maps feel even emptier. There’s a ton of space, but not enough players to fill it, which really hurts the gameplay.

We actually had a pretty good experience playing the game on PS5 yesterday at launch. We were initially unsure if it could succeed as an ongoing service, but we found it visually appealing, enjoyable to play, and with a lot of potential for strategic team gameplay, especially with its unique and fast-paced game mode.

Wildlight Entertainment has revealed its plans for 2026, outlining new content releases throughout the year. Players can expect seven major updates, each adding things like new maps, characters, game modes, mounts, and weapons.
