Nominations have dropped across the pond.
Following the announcement of the Academy Award nominations, the nominees for the BAFTAs – the British Academy Film Awards, the UK’s top film honors – were revealed on January 27th, adding a fresh group of potential winners to the awards season.
Similar to the Oscars, One Battle After Another and Sinners received the most nominations. However, Paul Thomas Anderson’s film edged out Ryan Coogler’s vampire movie, earning 14 nominations compared to 13.
As a huge fan, I was so thrilled to see Sinners get a record number of nominations at the BAFTAs – it’s incredible to see a Black director receive so much recognition! And it wasn’t just the film itself; Michael B. Jordan and Wunmi Mosaku both deservedly earned acting nominations, which is fantastic. Plus, Sinners is up for Best Film – I’m really hoping it wins!
Also nominated in this category are Hamnet, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value, alongside Sinners and OBAA. The actors receiving nominations include Jessie Buckley, Rose Byrne, Chase Infiniti, Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Hudson, Emma Stone, Ethan Hawke, and Renate Rensieve.
As a bit of a film buff, I’ve been looking at the BAFTA nominations, and while they largely align with the Oscars, there were a couple of surprises! I was thrilled to see Jesse Plemons nominated for his leading role in Bugonia, and Robert Aramayo also snagged a nomination for his work in the fantastic British film, I Swear. It’s always great to see some fresh faces and films getting recognized!
Although Paul Mescal wasn’t nominated for an Oscar for his role in Hamnet, he did receive a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Additionally, the film directed by Chloe Zhao has earned more BAFTA nominations for a female director than any other film, and Chloe is the sole woman nominated in the directing category this year.

Beyond the major awards, a few lesser-known films also received recognition. Wicked: For Good earned nominations for its Costume Design and Makeup & Hair, while Die My Love, featuring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, was nominated for Outstanding British Film.
Besides I Swear, other British films recognized by the BAFTAs included Pillion and The Ballad of Wallis Island. Carey Mulligan received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Ballad of Wallis Island.
