How to watch Bugonia in the UK – is it streaming?

As a huge movie fan, I’ve really noticed Yorgos Lanthimos, the Greek director, becoming a pretty consistent presence at the Oscars over the last ten years or so. It’s awesome to see a filmmaker get that kind of recognition repeatedly!

He’d seen some recognition for his previous films, like nominations for Dogtooth and The Lobster. However, his career really took off with The Favourite, a historical drama from 2018 that earned nine nominations and ultimately won Olivia Colman the Best Actress award.

His 2023 film, Poor Things, was also a success with the Academy Awards, receiving 11 nominations and winning four awards, including Best Actress for Emma Stone.

I was so thrilled with his previous work, and while his last movie, Kinds of Kindness, didn’t quite reach the same heights, I’m really excited he’s back with Bugonia this year! It’s nominated for four awards, including Best Picture, which is fantastic!

Curious about all the buzz and want to know how to watch it in the UK? Here’s everything you need to get started.

What is Bugonia about?

I recently watched a film that really grabbed me, and it’s actually inspired by a fantastic South Korean movie from 2003 called Save the Green Planet! – directed by Jang Joon-hwan. The story kicks off when these two guys, Teddy and Don, who are totally convinced there’s a huge conspiracy going on, decide to kidnap Michelle Fuller, a really important CEO. It’s a wild premise, and it immediately pulls you in!

I’ve been hearing some pretty wild theories from these two – they genuinely believe Michelle isn’t human at all! They’re convinced she’s an alien sent here to destroy Earth, which she, understandably, gets really upset about when they tell her.

Even though she insists she doesn’t know anything, Teddy and Don continue to interrogate her aggressively, hoping to confirm their suspicions. The story builds to a powerful and unforgettable conclusion.

If you’re familiar with director Yorgos Lanthimos’s other films, like The Lobster, The Favourite, and Poor Things, you’ll likely recognize his signature style of dark humor in this movie. It feels very consistent with his previous work.

Bugonia cast: Who stars alongside Emma Stone?

Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons lead the cast, and both have received critical acclaim for their acting, with Stone earning an Oscar nomination and both actors being nominated for a BAFTA award.

Aidan Delbis makes his acting debut as Don, Teddy’s autistic cousin, and Alicia Silverstone gives a standout performance as Teddy’s mother, Sandy. Comedian Stavros Halkias also joins the cast as police deputy Casey Boyd.

  • Emma Stone as Michelle Fuller
  • Jesse Plemons as Teddy Gatz
  • Aidan Delbis as Don
  • Stavros Halkias as Casey Boyd
  • Alicia Silverstone as Sandy Gatz
