Despite being around for a while, Adult Swim’s show is thriving. The action-horror series has become a streaming hit during its current third season, ranking among the most-watched programs on HBO Max in many countries.
As of January 27th, the animated series Primal ranks fifth among the top 10 TV shows worldwide on the streaming platform. This puts it ahead of other popular series like Heated Rivalry, Task, and The Winter King. Originally debuting in seventh place on the U.S. top 10 list, Primal has become a hit internationally, currently ranking third in Colombia, second in Costa Rica, and sixth in France, according to data from FlixPatrol.
Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of beloved shows like Dexter’s Laboratory and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, presents Primal. This action-packed series follows Spear, a caveman, and Fang, a T-Rex, as they struggle to survive in a dangerous prehistoric world filled with wild animals, dinosaurs, and the growing threat of other humans.
The 2019 film Primal is highly rated by both audiences and critics. It has a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and a perfect 100% score from critics.
The animated series Primal is known for its strong visual storytelling and limited use of dialogue, similar to Genndy Tartakovsky’s work on Samurai Jack. Over its three seasons, it received significant recognition, winning two Annie Awards from three nominations and five Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Animated Program in 2021.
Creator Genndy Tartakovsky Was Worried He’d Jumped The Shark With The Show’s Wildest Twist
The ending of Primal Season 2 saw Spear make the ultimate sacrifice to protect Fang and Mira, so viewers were surprised to see him return at the beginning of Season 3. Although creator Genndy Tartakovsky always intended the show to be an anthology series with changing storylines, he admits he questioned bringing Spear back to life.
Tartakovsky recently told IGN he worried the show might be reaching a point of no return – what some call ‘jumping the shark.’ He wondered if a particular creative decision was a mistake, but it felt right to him. When he discussed it with his team, they loved the idea. Once he explained the character’s emotional arc, everyone became enthusiastic about moving forward.
According to Tartakovsky, a key reason bringing Spear back felt natural was the strong bond he’d formed with his friends over the show’s first two seasons. He explained that it’s common for creators to spend years on a project, only to have viewers experience it in a short amount of time.
It just hit me how new and exciting the whole project still felt! Then, out of nowhere, I got this crazy idea to turn the character Spear into a zombie. And honestly, that one thought unlocked so many possibilities – new story angles, ways to develop the characters, and a ton of emotional depth I hadn’t even considered before. It was like a floodgate opened!
This strong emotional response immediately sparked an idea for the renowned animator. He explained, “I came up with eight episodes worth of story ideas right away. That’s when I know a concept has real potential.”
Primal is currently available to stream on HBO Max.
