The Marvel Cinematic Universe became popular because of how all its movies and characters connected. This began with the very first films in 2008, which hinted at a larger, shared story. The post-credit scene in Iron Man started a tradition of teasing future events, most notably the formation of The Avengers. And in The Incredible Hulk, Robert Downey Jr. unexpectedly appeared as Tony Stark, further connecting the stories. This clever approach became a key to the series’ success, building excitement and encouraging fans to follow every detail.
Marvel’s biggest strength – its incredibly detailed and interconnected movie universe – eventually became a problem. Knowing so much backstory became necessary to enjoy new films, which discouraged new viewers from jumping in. To fix this, Marvel Studios created “Marvel Spotlight,” a label for projects like the upcoming Wonder Man, meant to be enjoyed without any prior knowledge. However, this isn’t always the case in practice.
Marvel Spotlight Was Made for Projects With Loose Connections to the MCU

Inspired by a 1970s comic series, Marvel Spotlight launched in 2023 to help new viewers easily start watching shows on Disney+ without needing prior knowledge of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first show to use this label was Echo, which was designed to be a standalone story. However, while you could follow Echo without seeing other Marvel shows, it was definitely easier to understand if you were familiar with Hawkeye and Daredevil beforehand.
Let’s talk about Wonder Man, the latest series featuring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Similar to Echo, it’s only the second “Marvel Spotlight” series so far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This makes sense because the show introduces a new character and doesn’t seem connected to future movies like Avengers: Doomsday – at least, not that we know of. Essentially, you can watch it without needing to have seen any previous Marvel content and still understand and enjoy the story. But is that actually the case?
As a big Marvel fan, I’m really excited about Wonder Man because of two characters. First, Ben Kingsley is coming back as Trevor Slattery, who we first met in Iron Man 3 back in 2013. And his story is crazy! Remember how the marketing made it seem like he was the big villain, The Mandarin? Then the movie dropped this huge twist – he was just an actor playing The Mandarin! It totally shocked everyone and honestly, a lot of fans were pretty mad about it at the time.
I’ve been following Trevor Slattery’s story for a while now, and it’s surprisingly complex! It didn’t just end with Iron Man 3; he actually appeared in a short MCU film called “All Hail the King,” and even popped up in Shang-Chi. We learned he’d been held captive by the actual Mandarin all this time. As a longtime fan, I know there’s a lot of backstory going into the Wonder Man series, and honestly, I think new viewers might miss a lot of it, even with explanations. It’s a deep dive for those of us who’ve been keeping up!
The Disney+ series Wonder Man features the Department of Damage Control, a well-known organization from Marvel comics. They act as a team that cleans up after superhero battles and keeps an eye on potential super-powered individuals throughout the United States. While they first appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming, the series brings back Arian Moayed as Agent P. Cleary, a character fans may recognize from Spider-Man: No Way Home and the Ms. Marvel series.
You don’t need to have seen the other movies or shows these characters were in to understand Wonder Man – it focuses on a brand new story. However, the way Marvel is presenting this series as loosely connected to the main MCU might be misleading. The “Marvel Spotlight” label suggests you can skip previous content, but that might not be true. We hope fans don’t fall into that trap, especially since Wonder Man is already proving to be one of Marvel’s most popular shows.
