Al Roker Reveals What He Thinks of Retiring After 30 Years on Today

Al Roker has a low chance of inactivity in his forecast.

The longtime weather anchor on Today recently marked 30 years with the show and discussed his plans to eventually retire from the NBC morning program.

Al recently told People magazine that he has no plans to retire. “I really enjoy my work, and I’m feeling great,” he said. “I love what I do, and while I know I can’t do it forever, I don’t see that time coming anytime soon, so I’m just going to keep at it.”

At 71, the popular weather reporter has enjoyed a long and successful career since joining Today in 1996. He shares 36-year-old Courtney with his late ex-wife, Alice Bell, and has 27-year-old Leila and 23-year-old Nick with Deborah Roberts. Despite changes to the show over the years, he’s grateful his weather segment remains a consistent and beloved part of the program.

Al believes the strength of the broadcast lies in its consistent mission over the past 74 years. He emphasized that everyone involved is simply a caretaker of this important tradition, and while he won’t be able to continue forever, someone else will take his place. He considers being a part of this long-running show a truly special experience.

He explained that calling this a dream job wasn’t quite right, because he’d never imagined he’d be appearing on the Today show.

Despite initial doubts, Al eventually learned to ignore the skepticism. His co-hosts, including Savannah Guthrie, Jenna Bush Hager, Craig Melvin, and Sheinelle Jones, frequently told him how much his playful personality – and his expertise in climate science – had contributed to the show’s success.

Al’s colleagues at Today showed their affection for him by sharing a touching tribute during the January 27th show. They compiled a nearly eight-minute video featuring his most memorable moments.

Craig highlighted that Carson Daly is more than just a personality on the Today show, calling him a global representative. Daly’s career was also praised as a remarkable achievement.

When asked about receiving such a touching gift, Al shared how much his family means to him, including his parents. He expressed his gratitude to Allen and Isabel Roker, acknowledging they played a vital role in his journey. He then turned to the camera and added that it’s been an honor to share his life with everyone watching.
