Dragon Ball Super’s New Anime Is Only Delaying a Bigger Problem

Fans are excited that Dragon Ball Super is getting a new anime series based on the latest manga arc. However, the manga itself ended on a major cliffhanger, leaving readers wondering what happens next. While a full remake of the Battle of Gods arc, titled Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, will premiere this fall, this is just one part of the franchise’s big return. More continuation of the story is on the way.

I’m so excited! They’re making a new anime called Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol! It’s going to cover the Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc from the Dragon Ball Super manga. This is the first of two new stories happening after the Tournament of Power, and it’s been continuing the anime’s story in manga form. The slightly strange thing is, the manga is currently paused, so this anime will probably only be around for a little while before they run out of source material again.

Dragon Ball Super’s New Anime Only Has Two Arcs to Adapt

As of today, we don’t have a firm release date for Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol. However, considering the remake anime is coming this fall and will take up that time slot, I’d guess we’ll see it around 2027 or 2028. Ideally, the new series would start immediately after the remake finishes, adapting the manga’s story from there. That would give the creators another year to work on the content, which seems really important right now.

The current arc of Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol is relatively short, and the anime will likely move on to adapt the ‘Granolah the Survivor’ arc afterward. It’s estimated that adapting both arcs could take four to five years. Fans are hoping the manga will be further along by then, otherwise there might be a significant wait. This is particularly important because the manga already ended on a cliffhanger that the anime will eventually need to resolve before it catches up.

The issue seems to be with the Dragon Ball Super manga. If the anime is simply adapting the manga instead of creating original storylines, it will likely reach a standstill soon. The manga has been paused since Akira Toriyama’s death in 2024, and there’s no indication it will continue. Despite recent announcements of new anime and video games, there was no news about the future of Dragon Ball Super manga.

Dragon Ball Super’s Manga Still Has a Huge Cliffhanger

While the Dragon Ball Super manga recently finished adapting the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie, the story isn’t over yet. This marks the latest release in the Dragon Ball series before the events of the End of Z, but it’s important to understand what led up to it. Goku and Vegeta were shown training with Broly on Beerus’ planet because the Granolah the Survivor arc revealed Frieza had been secretly training to become the strongest fighter in the universe.

Black Frieza achieved a powerful, god-like transformation after training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for ten years. He easily defeated Goku and Vegeta, showing them they still needed to improve. As of the end of the Dragon Ball Super manga, this incredibly strong villain remains a threat. Many fans believe Black Frieza would make an excellent antagonist for a final story arc in this series.

The anime adaptation of Dragon Ball Super may run into problems when it gets to the Granolah the Survivor arc. If the manga doesn’t resume publication soon, anime viewers will be left with a major cliffhanger. Because the manga releases only one chapter per month, there may not be enough content available to fully develop the arc before the anime catches up. While the anime could try to address this, fans will likely still experience the impact of the manga’s slow release schedule later on.
