The show has finally found success with paid video on demand. It quickly became popular digitally, ranking among the top choices on the Apple TV Store just over six years after its last episode aired.
As of January 27th, Mr. Robot is a huge hit on the streaming service, ranking as the second most-watched show in both Canada and the United States. It’s currently behind RuPaul’s Drag Race in the U.S. rankings, but it’s performing better than other popular shows like Landman, IT: Welcome to Derry, and Euphoria. The show was previously available on Netflix but moved to a pay-per-view option on January 3rd.
Debuting in 2015 on USA Network, Mr. Robot follows Elliot Alderson, a talented cybersecurity expert and hacker, as he battles a powerful and corrupt technology company and various activist groups. The show also explores Elliot’s personal struggles with mental illness. Featuring a strong ensemble cast including Christian Slater, Carly Chaikin, Portia Doubleday, Martin Wallström, and Grace Gummer, Mr. Robot was critically acclaimed and popular with viewers, earning a 93% rating from critics and a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
In addition to being highly praised for its relevant political insights and captivating story, Mr. Robot received numerous awards after its first season. In 2016, the show won two Golden Globes: Best Television Series – Drama and Best Supporting Actor for Rami Malek. That same year, Rami Malek also won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and the show continued to be recognized, earning one more Emmy – for Outstanding Interactive Extension of a Linear Program – in 2020, over its four-season run.
Rami Malek Greatly Admired His Co-Star Christian Slater
Malek’s role as Elliot brought him more than just an Emmy. He also formed a lasting friendship with Christian Slater. Malek recently shared how much he admired Slater when they first met on set, recalling the early days of working together and how much he looked up to him.
Rami Malek told Christian Slater that he was incredibly starstruck when they first met on the set of Mr. Robot, but was pleasantly surprised by how down-to-earth, kind, and giving Slater was. Despite being a longtime fan who had seen all of Slater’s movies and shows, Malek managed to stay composed while working with him, as he revealed in an Interview Magazine conversation last October.
Being around him is always special,” Malek shared about his close friend. “I get why people get so excited meeting him, but it didn’t faze me. He’s incredibly genuine and likeable – so much so that I wondered if it could be real. But it is! He truly is as down-to-earth as he seems, and that’s a rare quality for someone who’s constantly in the public eye.
Mr. Robot is currently available for purchase on the Apple TV Store.
