Netflix is seeing huge success with The Magnificent Seven. The 2016 Western, starring Ethan Hawke and others, is a fresh take on the classic 1960 film, which was originally inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 movie, Seven Samurai. The remake quickly became popular, rising on Netflix’s global charts as early as January 19th.
For the week of January 19th-25th, The Magnificent Seven (2016) was the sixth most popular movie on Netflix worldwide, with 6.5 million views and 14.5 million hours watched. It came in after The Rip at number one, followed by Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart, No Time to Die, People We Meet on Vacation, and KPop Demon Hunters. It was more popular than Spectre, Max, Suitcase Killer: The Melanie McGuire Story, and Freelance, which ranked tenth.
This week, the film The Magnificent Seven is a top 10 hit in 36 countries throughout Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe. While it’s not currently on Netflix in the U.S., you can stream The Magnificent Seven (released in 2016) on MGM+.
Antoine Fuqua directed The Magnificent Seven (2016), a film written by Nic Pizzolatto and Richard Wenk. It stars Ethan Hawke as part of a group of seven gunslingers, each with a unique background, who come together to help a brave widow protect her town from the violent private army of a wealthy businessman.
The film features a talented cast including Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Vincent D’Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Martin Sensmeier, who play the central group of seven. Peter Sarsgaard, Haley Bennett, Luke Grimes, Matt Bomer, Jonathan Joss, Cam Gigandet, Sean Bridgers, Billy Slaughter, Mark Ashworth, and William Lee Scott also star.
Reviews for The Magnificent Seven were mixed, earning it a 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While many critics found it to be a fun and exciting action movie, they generally agreed it didn’t quite live up to the high expectations set by its name or the original films that influenced it.
The movie was generally well-received by audiences, earning a 71% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also performed reasonably well in theaters, bringing in $162.4 million globally on a budget of $90 to $107 million.
I’ve been really impressed with Ethan Hawke lately – he’s becoming a streaming powerhouse! The Magnificent Seven is just the latest example of his success. His FX series, The Lowdown, has been a huge hit globally on Disney+ and Hulu, and Black Phone 2 has been absolutely killing it on Peacock’s Top 10 chart here in the US for the past ten days. It’s great to see an actor consistently deliver across different genres and platforms.
