I’m seeing that Microsoft is actively developing the next big update to Windows 11, currently planned for release this fall as version 26H2. It looks like this update will roll out to everyone already using Windows 11 – those on versions 25H2 and 24H2 will be able to get it. Interestingly, it’s built on the same core foundation as those earlier releases, which Microsoft internally calls ‘Germanium’.
The update will be a quick download and installation, similar to a small package. It’s expected to have the same features as previous versions, 25H2 and 24H2, but with improvements to the underlying system that you won’t directly see.
Microsoft is starting to test early versions of its next big Windows update, currently known as 26H2, with those in the Insider Dev Channel. These test versions, numbered in the 26300 series, clearly indicate Microsoft is developing this release. Here’s a summary of what we’ve learned about the upcoming update so far.
Windows 11 is getting a new update, version 26H1, this spring. However, this version – built on the ‘Bromine’ platform – won’t be available as an upgrade for current Windows 11 users. Instead, it will come pre-installed on new computers powered by the latest Arm processors.
Release date
Microsoft is expected to release the next update to Windows 11 later this year, likely in September or October, as they usually do.
The update won’t be available to everyone at the same time. Microsoft releases new versions gradually, based on your device and location, so it may take a little while to reach you.
New features
Similar to recent updates, Microsoft is planning to release version 26H2 of Windows 11 with the same features as the current version, 25H2. This is because both versions are built on the same core platform, internally known as Germanium, so they will offer a consistent experience.
Eventually, things will probably change once the original Windows 11 version is no longer supported. However, until then, I expect the two versions to look and function the same.
Platform changes
Microsoft plans to update Windows 11 with several improvements later this year. These updates are currently being tested in preview builds (version 26H2) and will happen ‘under the hood’ to improve performance and stability.
The company hasn’t yet shared details about upcoming changes to its platform. Considering the recent negative feedback regarding problematic Windows updates, we’re hoping Microsoft will prioritize stability and security throughout the rest of the year.
Microsoft has a somewhat complicated plan for Windows updates. This spring, a new version (26H1) will only be pre-installed on new computers with the latest Arm processors. Later this fall, Microsoft may release two different versions of another update (26H2): one called Germanium for current PCs, and a separate version named Bromine specifically for those new Arm-based computers.
