Marvel’s latest series, Wonder Man, is a bit of a departure for the MCU. Unlike most superhero shows, it prioritizes character development and emotional stories over constant action. The show only briefly touches on the character’s powers and how he got them. Created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, Wonder Man is receiving high praise, currently boasting a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The premise – an actor struggling with his career who discovers he has real superpowers while filming a superhero movie – is cleverly self-aware and promises a unique take on the genre.
The show Wonder Man feels like a love letter to Hollywood, featuring many famous actors appearing as themselves. However, observant viewers will notice the first episode is dedicated to someone less well-known: Juan “Spike” Osorio. There’s a sad story behind this dedication.
Juan “Spike” Osorio Tragically Died on the Set of Wonder Man
As a longtime movie fan, I was really saddened to hear about the tragic accident on the set of Wonder Man. J.C. “Spike” Osorio, a lighting tech, died on February 6, 2024, even before filming had started. It turns out he fell through a really old, rotten catwalk in Stage 3 at the Radford Studio Center. The official investigation showed the catwalk had been weakened over decades by age, the weather, and just being used a lot. Basically, it unexpectedly gave way while he was standing on it – a truly awful accident.
Family and friends announced the passing of Ricardo Osorio, describing him as a devoted husband, son, and brother, as well as a dedicated friend and veteran. He was known for his passions, including collecting euphorbias and his expertise as a lighting technician, and was always committed to workplace safety. He is survived by his wife, Joanne Osorio-Wu, his mother, Zoila Osorio, and his beloved schnauzers, Murphy Pastrami and Sirius Pickle. A candlelit vigil held on February 18, 2024, drew hundreds of attendees from the entertainment industry to honor his life.
Following a tragic accident, California’s workplace safety agency fined both Disney and Radford Studio Center, prompting studios to improve the safety of their overhead walkways. Now, Marvel is appropriately honoring the worker who died, Juan Osorio, by dedicating the first episode of Wonder Man to his memory. While the studio initially released a brief statement of condolences and pledged cooperation with the investigation, this dedication feels like a more meaningful tribute.
