The new show Wonder Man, created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, has just been released, and a second season is looking likely given its cliffhanger ending. Simon Williams, a well-known Avengers character in the comics, has been anticipated to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe for quite some time. In fact, there were plans to introduce him as early as 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, with director James Gunn hoping to cast Nathan Fillion. However, the role ultimately went to another actor, and now, nine years later, Wonder Man has arrived – but not with Fillion in the part.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays Simon Williams, an actor with superpowers who is struggling and determined to become known as “Wonder Man.” The first season is cleverly self-aware, as it tells the story of a man with powers trying out for a superhero part. Despite receiving almost perfect reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, the question remains: will Wonder Man get a second season?
How Wonder Man Season 1 Sets Up Season 2

The first season of Wonder Man centers around Simon Williams struggling to hide his powers, but his secret is revealed by the end. After investigating an explosion, the organization Damage Control determines it was caused by a superhuman and figures out Simon can control ionic energy. However, Simon beats them to the punch, publicly revealing his abilities when he breaks Trevor Slattery out of prison. Now, both Simon and Trevor are fugitives.
Season 2 of Wonder Man is shaping up to be quite different from what we’ve seen before. Simon Williams is now a well-known actor and a fugitive, but he has an advantage: Damage Control will likely cover up the truth about “the Mandarin” to avoid embarrassment, keeping the situation under wraps. And Slattery, comfortable with operating in secret, should continue to be a valuable asset.
Will Wonder Man Appear In Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars?
Rumors suggest Wonder Man might reappear in either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, but Marvel hasn’t confirmed anything yet. The first season doesn’t seem crucial to the larger Multiverse Saga – in fact, one of its creators admitted the show was nearly canceled due to the writers’ strikes. Recently, that creator has said Wonder Man’s future with the Avengers is still up in the air. According to him, Marvel prefers to let projects succeed or fail on their own merits, and will decide whether to continue using characters based on audience response.
Interestingly, Wonder Man might be heading in a completely unexpected direction. The show is intentionally keeping the source of Simon Williams’ powers a mystery, suggesting he could be a mutant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given Damage Control’s important role in introducing the MCU’s first official mutant in Ms. Marvel, it’s easy to imagine this leading into the larger Mutant Saga after the Secret Wars storyline.
What’s Been Said About Wonder Man Season 2

Despite the lack of official news, many believe a second season of Wonder Man is unlikely. The show feels like a leftover from a time when Marvel was creating a lot more content. Disney, under CEO Bob Iger, has now scaled back Marvel’s TV production to just two shows per year. Historically, Marvel hasn’t renewed many of its live-action series—only Daredevil: Born Again has been confirmed to return for another season—and this trend seems set to continue with the new, more limited approach.
The end of Wonder Man includes a funny, self-aware moment where Simon talks to Zlatko Burić’s character, Von Kovak, the director of the movie within the show. They discuss the possibility of a sequel, admit the show isn’t perfect, but say they’ll consider it based on how viewers react. It feels like a direct message to the audience, suggesting the show’s future depends on its popularity.
