RUMOR: Marvel May Be Splitting ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Into Two Films – WDW Pro Rumor Confirmed?

There’s growing speculation that Avengers: Secret Wars might actually be released as two separate movies. This idea started circulating in May 2025 when reports suggested the Russo Brothers and Marvel were considering turning Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars into a three-part series. At the time, some wondered if Marvel was worried about introducing Doctor Doom and ensuring the long-term success of the franchise.

According to John Rocha from The Hot Mic podcast, sources are suggesting the upcoming Doomsday event could be three hours long. He also mentioned Marvel is potentially planning to release Secret Wars in two parts. However, Rocha noted that these rumors have circulated before, so he’s unsure if the reports contain any new information.

Jeff Sneider, who co-hosts the show with Rocha, hadn’t heard about this possibility but thought it could happen. They pointed out that the upcoming Doomsday movie is already planned to be over three hours long. If Secret Wars needs even more story development, splitting the final movie into two parts would give the filmmakers more time to finish the characters’ stories. It would also allow Marvel to postpone the start of the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Adjusting the Trajectory

The buzz is getting louder, and a recent report from Variety on June 18, 2025, seems to confirm it: Marvel has a film tentatively scheduled for December 15, 2028. As Pro pointed out, they already have Doomsday and Secret Wars lined up for December 2026 and 2027, respectively. So, a third Avengers movie in December 2028? It just makes sense – a perfect fit for that empty slot in their release schedule.

According to Variety, the upcoming Secret Wars movie is planned as the conclusion of Marvel’s Multiverse Saga. After that, Marvel is expected to focus on stories featuring characters they gained when Disney bought 20th Century Fox in 2019, like the X-Men. While recent comments don’t reveal anything completely new, they indicate Marvel has been planning this shift in focus for a while now.

However, the decision to divide Secret Wars into two movies and make Avengers a three-part series might not be solely about storytelling. Disney could also be trying to reduce the financial risks associated with these big-budget films.

What the Avengers Franchise Needs to Succeed

Marvel’s three 2025 releases—Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and Fantastic Four: First Steps—didn’t do well in theaters. These films were expected to help grow the Marvel brand and set the stage for Doomsday, but they likely lost money for the studio. Despite this, early marketing for the next Avengers movie is going well, though the film is rumored to have a very large budget.

For the Marvel Cinematic Universe to keep making sequels and eventually recast iconic roles with new actors, the next Avengers movies need to be financially successful. Splitting the concluding story into two films – something Disney has already planned for – could help maximize profits at the box office.

In May, a source suggested the next Avengers film could be called Avengers: Forever. The future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – whether it continues for many years or this marks the end of the series – might depend on how well audiences receive the upcoming two-part Secret Wars movie.
