Iron Man Soars To New Heights (And Gets Marvel’s 2026 Off To Stellar Star) [Review]

Marvel is kicking off the year with an exciting new Iron Man comic series, and it’s off to a fantastic start! The creative team – Joshua Williamson, Carmen Carnero, Nolan Woodard, and Joe Caramagna – is delivering a debut issue that not only lives up to the hype, but exceeds it.

The new Iron Man comic immediately sets up an interesting story, and its impact is felt throughout the entire issue. While the villainous group A.I.M. has often gone after Tony Stark, their current leader, Madame Masque, is changing their strategy. Instead of just trying to copy his technology, they now want to find someone like Tony Stark – someone who can constantly create and lead innovation for years to come. This makes sense for a group like A.I.M., as they want to be at the forefront of technology, not just play catch-up. This kind of meaningful change to the villains is what has made the recent Superman comics so good, and it’s already happening with Iron Man in this very first issue.

PROS CONS
Tony Stark is the perfect lovable jerk with a heart of gold Hoping to see Pepper’s role expanded in future issues
Carnero and Woodard’s artwork and colors are out of this world
A.I.M. feels fresh for the first time in a while

This change in A.I.M.’s strategy has far-reaching consequences, and as the story unfolds, the connections between Stark and Masque’s plan, along with A.I.M.’s reasons for acting, become increasingly surprising. In fact, the biggest shock of this issue is seeing how Tony accepts responsibility for the threat and his part in creating it, which instantly makes you sympathize with him.

When it comes to visually designing Iron Man, Carnero and Woodard are a fantastic team. Their work is especially evident in the breathtaking splash page showing Iron Man’s armor flying through the sky after changing from a hover bike. They make the armor look both beautiful and powerful, with vibrant colors and a dynamic style that suggests it can really deliver in a fight.

While Iron Man’s suit is impressive, the story also focuses on developing the characters around Tony Stark. The writer introduces Pepper and Melinda in significant roles, which really enhances Tony’s personality. Pepper helps reveal his softer, more human side, while Melinda allows him to be the playfully arrogant person fans already know and love. Each character brings out a different facet of Tony, and it will be exciting to see how these dynamics evolve throughout the series and impact his other relationships.

The first issue of Iron Man is fantastic and delivers on all expectations, leaving me incredibly excited for what’s next for this iconic Marvel hero.
