When Star Wars: The Phantom Menace was released, everyone was intrigued by the menacing character of Darth Maul. Interestingly, the film deliberately keeps his backstory a mystery. We only see that he’s visually intimidating and speaks very little. Later in the movie, we discover he’s a skilled fighter with a unique double-bladed lightsaber, showcased brilliantly by Ray Park’s impressive acrobatic performance.
I always loved Darth Maul as a character, even though The Phantom Menace itself didn’t quite land with everyone at the time. It’s funny, when a character really catches on with fans, it’s tough for the franchise to let them stay gone! Maul is a perfect example – after being cut in half, he’s popped up in a bunch of different Star Wars shows and movies. I’m going to walk you through all his reappearances. Just to be clear, when I say ‘resurrection’ here, I simply mean he returned in something other than The Phantom Menace, not that he kept dying and coming back over and over again.
5) Star Wars: The Clone Wars

As a huge Star Wars fan, I always loved learning more about Darth Maul’s backstory in The Clone Wars. It was a cool surprise to discover he had brothers! Turns out, he had an older brother named Savage Opress, and even a younger one named Feral. The really interesting part is that Savage didn’t even know about Maul until Mother Talzin told him, figuring Maul had somehow survived his duel with Obi-Wan. Of course, Savage immediately set out to find him, and eventually tracked him down on this desolate planet called Lotho Minor.
Following his duel with Obi-Wan, Maul fled to a remote Outer Rim planet and spent years brooding over his loss. He and his brother, Savage, then plotted their revenge. After receiving mechanical legs, they captured Obi-Wan and brutally attacked him. Surprisingly, Obi-Wan was rescued by the Sith apprentice Asajj Ventress, and the two of them managed to escape. Throughout the fourth and fifth seasons of The Clone Wars, Maul plays a significant supporting role.
4) Star Wars Rebels

Though his story on Star Wars Rebels technically happened before other events, it marks the end of Darth Maul’s life. We find him mourning the death of his brother, Savage Opress, who was killed in The Clone Wars. Eventually, he begins to manipulate the Jedi Padawan Ezra Bridger while they search for a Sith holocron. Once they find it, they team up with Ahsoka Tano and Kanan Jarrus to fight off several Inquisitors.
Honestly, it’s heartbreaking, but Maul never really redeemed himself. He ended up attacking his own master, Kanan, and even fought Ahsoka! Then, he just left Ezra behind and stole a TIE fighter to hunt down Obi-Wan for a final showdown. He tracked Obi-Wan to Tatooine, but it didn’t end well for him. Obi-Wan was just too strong – he sliced Maul’s lightsaber in two, wounded him badly, and Maul ultimately died in his arms. It was a tragic end to a really complex character.
3) Solo: A Star Wars Story

Solo: A Star Wars Story is set roughly five years before the events of Rebels and nine years after the end of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Because it’s considered official Star Wars canon, characters like Maul appear consistent with their appearances in those other shows – including still having his robotic legs.
His brief appearance in Solo lasted about ninety seconds, but ultimately didn’t lead anywhere because the film wasn’t successful. Still, it was a fascinating idea to connect him to a sequel by having Maul guide Emilia Clarke’s character, Qi’ra, to his home world of Dathomir and help him run the criminal group Crimson Dawn.
2) Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 7

You might wonder why season seven of Star Wars: The Clone Wars is listed on its own. The reason is that it wasn’t originally planned. It only happened because of Disney+. Essentially, it marked the second time the creators decided to bring the character Maul back into The Clone Wars storyline.
In Season 7, Maul has a significant role, appearing in the last five of the season’s twelve episodes. His storyline reaches a climax when he senses Anakin’s fall to the dark side, escapes from imprisonment by crashing his ship, and goes into hiding as the Empire gains power.
1) Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord

Set between the events of The Clone Wars and Rebels, the new Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord comic reveals what Maul was up to roughly a year after the Clone Wars ended. It shows him establishing his criminal organization and searching for a young apprentice he can mold and train.
The new 10-episode series arrives on Disney+ on April 6th. Created by Dave Filoni, like many recent Star Wars projects, it will release with two episodes each week for a total of ten episodes.
