New PS5 Firmware Update Released to End January 2026, Here’s What It Does

Sony has released a new software update for both the PS5 and PS5 Pro. While most PS5 updates focus on improving performance and stability, this January 2026 update is different. It includes two new features designed to make the console easier and more enjoyable to use.

A new PS5 update is available now! Firmware version 26.01-12.60.00 introduces improvements to the console’s social features. You can now see read receipts for messages, letting you know when someone has seen what you sent. The update also lets you instantly join games your friends are already playing directly from the Welcome Hub. As usual, Sony has also boosted the PS5 and PS5 Pro’s overall performance and stability.

You can find the full patch notes for this new PS5 update right here:

  • You can now jump directly from the Friends Activity widget in your Welcome Hub to the games your friends are playing.
  • You can now turn on read receipts to show other players when you’ve read their messages.
    • To turn on your read receipts, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy > View and Customize Your Privacy Settings. Under Communication and multiplayer, set Show read receipts to other players on PS5 and PlayStation App to Allow.
    • This feature will be rolled out gradually, and some users will be able to use it when the system software update is released.
  • We’ve improved the messages and usability on some screens.
  • We’ve improved system software performance and stability.

A Bigger PS5 Update Should Be Coming Soon

A significant update for PlayStation 5 consoles is expected soon, with a particular focus on enhancing performance for the upcoming PS5 Pro model. This update centers around PSSR technology, a key feature of the new platform. While Sony hasn’t confirmed a release date, sources suggest it could be available as early as March.

We might find out more about this update at PlayStation’s first State of Play event in 2026. Rumors suggest it will take place in February, possibly on February 12th. If any news about the new PS5 update is revealed, we’ll share it with you right here on ComicBook.
