The best new PowerToys feature just got even better — now I can’t live without it

I’m a big fan of apps, especially well-made Windows applications. PowerToys is a standout, and it recently got a useful update, even though it’s a minor one.

PowerToys has been updated to version 0.97.1. This release mainly includes bug fixes, with a few new features added to CursorWrap.

As a researcher exploring PowerToys, I’ve been testing out its newest feature, and it’s quite clever. It essentially links the edges of your screen together. This means if you move your cursor to one side, it seamlessly appears on the opposite side – it ‘wraps’ around. This works not just horizontally, but vertically too, letting you move between the top and bottom edges of your screen just as easily.

The newest PowerToys update enhances the CursorWrap feature and resolves several issues in other tools. You can find a complete list of changes on the app’s GitHub page and summarized below.

PowerToys v0.97.1: What’s New

PowerToys version 0.97.1 is a small update, but it includes useful improvements and bug fixes. The Cursor Wrap feature now works better with multiple monitors, and you can choose to have it wrap around the screen either horizontally or vertically.

Why is PowerToys one of the best Windows apps?

The CursorWrap feature is relatively new to PowerToys, having been added just about a week ago. When it launched with PowerToys version 0.97.0, I was eager to test it out immediately.

CursorWrap was helpful and interesting even when it first launched, though I had a couple of small issues with it. At first, it only had an on or off setting, and I would have liked more control over how it worked. I prefer wrapping the cursor horizontally, but not vertically, because I often quickly move my cursor to the top or bottom of the screen with a flick of my wrist.

PowerToys v0.97.1 adds the option to lock CursorWrap to horizontal-only or vertical-only mode.

This PowerToys update fixes an issue where Cursor Wrap would stop working correctly when using a laptop connected to an external monitor, specifically after closing the laptop lid.

It’s fantastic to see such a quick response to feedback, and I really appreciate the developers taking action so promptly. That commitment to listening and improving is a major reason why PowerToys is so successful.
