ITV confirm “contemporary reimagining” of beloved detective series Dalziel and Pascoe – and with a new dynamic

ITV announced they are making a new version of the detective series Dalziel and Pascoe, updating it for modern audiences.

Dalziel and Pascoe was a popular crime series that ran on BBC One for 12 seasons, from 1996 to 2007. It starred Colin Buchanan and Warren Clarke.

The show follows the partnership between experienced detective Dalziel and his new, rules-focused colleague, DS Pascoe. They work in the made-up town of Wetherton, in Yorkshire.

Despite frequently disagreeing with each other, both at work and in their personal lives, Dalziel and Pascoe discover that their contrasting personalities actually make them a highly effective team. Surprisingly, each investigation they tackle brings them closer together, and they slowly develop into a powerful and reliable duo.

This TV series is based on characters from the novels of Reginald Hill, a British crime writer. Throughout his career, Hill wrote 24 books featuring the detectives Dalziel and Pascoe, beginning in 1970 and continuing until 2009 – just three years before he passed away.

BritBox has ordered a new series, and Nana Hughes, ITV’s head of scripted comedy, is managing its production.

Hughes expressed his excitement about introducing the classic Dalziel and Pascoe mysteries to a new generation of viewers, calling it a real honor to revisit Reginald Hill’s work.

This series really centers around the surprising connection between two detectives who are quite different, and we’re looking forward to showing how that relationship develops.

Jonathan Fisher, head of West Road Pictures, said they’re thrilled to be updating the classic Reginald Hill detective series for modern viewers. He hopes audiences will connect with the show’s unique and clever detective duo all over again.

Isher Sahota will direct the new six-episode series, and Juliet Charlesworth, known for her work on Happy Valley, will produce it. Viewers can watch on ITV and STV, as well as stream it on ITVX and the STV Player.

Although the actors haven’t been revealed yet, filming for the new series is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2026 in northern England.

All seasons of the 1996 series of Dalziel and Pascoe are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
