The Saw movies have evolved significantly since the first film premiered at Sundance. What started as an independent hit has grown into a major horror series with a complex backstory. James Wan, the director of the original, hopes the next installment will return to the simpler, more focused style of the first movie.
The future of the Saw movies is currently uncertain. After Saw X didn’t do as well as hoped at the box office, plans for Saw XI were canceled. This led Lionsgate to step away from the franchise, with Blumhouse taking over. Jason Blum, the head of Blumhouse, has expressed interest in bringing James Wan back to the series. Wan recently discussed the possibility of future Saw films with Letterboxd, and while he didn’t share any concrete details, he suggested he’d like to see a new movie recapture the feel of the original.
I think I’m approaching this project with a really fresh perspective, allowing me to revisit it with new ideas. I want the next Saw movie to recapture the feeling of the original, and most importantly, I want to make it truly scary again – not just visually shocking, but deeply unsettling, like the first film Leigh Whannell and I created.
James Wan has been credited as a producer on all of the Saw films, but he says he hasn’t actively participated in making them since Saw III. He thinks stepping back will actually help him approach future installments with a fresh perspective, unburdened by past decisions and expectations.
Now that a new studio is leading the way and James Wan wants to revisit the original ideas, many are asking if a reboot is likely. The story of the Saw films has become quite complex with all of Jigsaw’s followers and elaborate traps. A future Saw movie would have a lot of backstory to explain, and it might be simpler to start fresh instead.

James Wan is spot-on – the series really needs to go back to its roots in psychological horror. The original film connected with audiences because it focused less on gruesome traps and more on the idea behind Jigsaw. He saw himself as helping people by forcing them to confront their choices and appreciate life, and that core concept has been lost amidst all the gore in recent movies.
The Saw franchise used to release a new movie every year, but there haven’t been any recent announcements about the next installment. Hopefully, this means the filmmakers are taking their time to create something truly worthwhile.
