A new anime for Dragon Ball Super is in the works, and it might be released differently than previous seasons. Following recent changes in how One Piece is being released, fans can expect a similar approach for the new Dragon Ball Super anime, which will adapt the Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc from the manga. While a release date hasn’t been announced yet, Toei Animation and Shueisha are updating how they handle their projects.
The original Dragon Ball Super anime series finished airing eight years ago, running for over 100 episodes. Fans used to enjoy new adventures with Goku and his friends every week, but the new series will likely be different. Instead of weekly episodes, it’s expected to follow a seasonal format, with each season containing around 23 to 26 episodes, similar to how One Piece is released.
New Dragon Ball Super Anime Likely Going to Be Seasonal

Last year, Toei Animation surprised anime fans with a major change to how new episodes of One Piece will be released. Instead of releasing episodes weekly as they used to, they’re switching to a seasonal schedule. Starting in 2026, they plan to release 26 episodes per year, and these episodes will more closely follow the story from Eiichiro Oda’s original manga. The new Dragon Ball Super anime is expected to follow a similar release pattern.
Unlike previous seasons of Dragon Ball Super that had over 100 episodes, the new series, Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, will probably have around 26 episodes each year. Even if the story needs more than two sets of episodes, it likely won’t go much longer. This anime will cover chapters 42-67 of the manga’s Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc. Since that’s only about 24 chapters, the anime will probably consist of just two sets of episodes, meaning it will be much shorter than previous runs.
This Is Going to Be the Best Thing for Dragon Ball Super
A potential remake of the Dragon Ball Super anime could be a great move for the series. Many fans have wanted a remake because the original anime felt overly long compared to the movies that inspired it. A new anime that closely follows the manga, while still allowing for some creative freedom, could easily cover everything needed in around 26 episodes. This would ultimately be a positive change for the series.
A new season of Dragon Ball Super is the most likely path forward for the series. The anime currently has enough manga material for two story arcs, which could be adapted into two seasons. These breaks will give the manga time to resume publication and provide more content for future adaptation. While this comeback might be shorter overall, it’s the best way to ensure the series continues successfully.
