I still think about the ending of Arrow all these years later – it’s been six years since it finished, and honestly, a particular meme keeps it alive in my mind! I remember being hooked when it first premiered on The CW back in 2012, watching Oliver Queen transform into the Green Arrow. What really blew me away was how it launched this whole interconnected universe! Soon we had The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, and Black Lightning all part of the same world. Those crossover events were incredible, and seeing The CW build towards something huge like Crisis on Infinite Earths was a real treat. It was an amazing experience being along for the ride!
Look, as a big fan of superhero shows, it was tough when Arrow wrapped up after eight seasons on January 28, 2020. It was the first of the Arrowverse shows to finish its run, and honestly, it felt like a real turning point. Plus, it launched this hilarious internet meme that everyone still talks about, which is kinda cool!
Arrow Ended Six Years Ago, Ending An Era

Arrow concluded its eight-season run on January 28, 2020, with a touching final episode. The series ended with its hero, Oliver Queen, also known as the Green Arrow, making the ultimate sacrifice to save the world. This took place during the large-scale ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ storyline, where he used the power of the Spectre to restore the multiverse before peacefully passing away.
As we headed into the final two episodes of Arrow, things took a really interesting turn. The episode before the finale jumped ahead to 2040, revealing a surprisingly peaceful Star City thanks to Oliver Queen’s ultimate sacrifice. But even in a peaceful future, heroes are still needed, and we see Mia stepping up to become the new Green Arrow. Then came the finale, “Fadeout,” which cleverly wove together flashbacks of Oliver and Diggle battling past foes with a trip to 2040. Sara Lance ultimately travels forward in time to ask Mia to come back and attend Oliver’s funeral, bringing the series full circle.
As a huge fan, I was thrilled to see so many familiar faces in the finale – even Tommy, Moira, Quentin, and Emiko showed up for the private funerals. It was really touching to see Flash, Felicity, and the others there too. But the very end… wow. The Monitor took Felicity to this incredible dimension where Oliver was finally at peace, which confirmed that his sacrifice actually did lead to a happy ending for him, even after everything. Honestly, it felt like the perfect conclusion to what’s been one of the most important DC shows ever made.
The Grant Gustin Meme Was Based on This Episode

Many people recall a memorable image from the series finale that surprisingly wasn’t actually in the episode. Actor Echo Kellum, who played Curtis Holt on Arrow, posted a funny photo on Instagram of Grant Gustin (from The Flash) jokingly kneeling at Oliver Queen’s grave, smiling and giving a peace sign. He shared the picture alongside a heartfelt message about how much Arrow meant to his career and the success of The Flash. Kellum captioned it, “Literally the best cast and crew around! So much fun with these goof balls.”
This photo has become a popular internet meme, even among people who aren’t familiar with the TV show Arrow or how it ended. People are taking the image of Oliver Queen’s memorial and changing the inscription to make jokes about things happening in their own lives. For example, some have replaced the text with phrases like “When the guy who stole your girl dies,” “Disco,” or even references to other superhero universes, like a tombstone reading “Loki” with “Also Loki” written above a picture of Grant Gustin.
Grant Gustin jokingly says he’s become more well-known for a popular meme than for playing The Flash. He’s been sent the meme constantly, even by people he hasn’t heard from in years, because it’s spread widely across all kinds of online communities. Gustin feels it’s reached every corner of the internet and has even joked that he wants it on his tombstone, believing it’s become his most recognizable claim to fame.
