Lynne Ramsey’s new film, ‘Die My Love,’ starring Jennifer Lawrence as Grace, isn’t exactly a romance. We meet Grace and her boyfriend, Jackson (Robert Pattinson), as they explore a dilapidated house that belonged to Jackson’s uncle – a man whose death is revealed later in a darkly humorous way. As they begin making plans to renovate the house, their connection quickly escalates into an impulsive sexual encounter.
After a while, Grace and Jackson settled into a new home and welcomed their first child. While the arrival of twins brought immense joy to the Editor’s wife, the Editor jokingly considered it a potential source of organ donation (‘You’re fired!’ he quipped). However, for Grace and Jackson, the baby’s arrival marked the start of difficulties. Jackson’s frequent work travel left Grace isolated at home with the baby, and she began to struggle with worsening postnatal depression.
Jackson’s mother, Sissy Spacek’s character, is the first to realize Grace is falling apart. Grace’s mental health deteriorates, starting with casual remarks about motherhood and escalating to disturbing behavior like crawling through the grass with a knife towards her baby, or waking up in uncontrollable tears. Interestingly, the editor notes his wife sometimes has similar tearful awakenings, jokingly threatening his job (‘You’re definitely fired! – Ed’).
As a film lover, I have to say this movie really belongs to Jennifer Lawrence. She gives an absolutely stunning performance, and it feels like the film actually uses who she is as a public figure – that relatable clumsiness, her playful sexiness, how she never seems to take herself too seriously, and that impulsive energy. It’s not an easy film to sit through, especially if you’ve dealt with postpartum depression yourself or been close to someone who has. It doesn’t offer any easy answers or a comforting resolution as we watch Grace struggle. But honestly, it just reinforces what many of us already knew: Jennifer Lawrence is truly one of the best actresses working today.
