The upcoming live-action sequel to How to Train Your Dragon is recasting the character of Eret. Instead of Kit Harington, who voiced the character in the animated film, an actor from the show Ted Lasso will take on the role. Production on the new movie is now underway.
Phil Dunster added to the cast of How to Train Your Dragon 2 as Eret
Phil Dunster has been cast as Eret in Universal Pictures’ upcoming live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Kit Harington first provided the voice for the character Eret in the 2014 animated movie. Eret is a proud dragon hunter who claims to be the best in the world. Meanwhile, Jamie Dunster, famous for playing Jamie Tartt in the Emmy-winning show Ted Lasso, will also be in the new HBO comedy series Rooster.
Dean DeBlois, who directed and wrote the original animated ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ movies and the recent live-action film, is back to write, direct, and produce this new live-action adaptation. The story follows Hiccup, now portrayed by Mason Thames, and his dragon Toothless as they navigate fresh obstacles, including the reappearance of Hiccup’s mother and a new threat from Drago Bludvist, played by Ólafur Darri Ólafsson.
I’m really excited about the actors in this! Nico Parker is playing Astrid, and it’s fantastic to see Gerard Butler and Cate Blanchett returning as Stoick and Valka – they were amazing in the animated films. Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, and Harry Trevaldwyn are joining the cast too. Marc Platt and Adam Siegel are producing, and Lexi Barta is overseeing everything at Universal.
The 2014 animated film How to Train Your Dragon 2 centers on Hiccup finding a hidden dragon haven and reconnecting with his mother. Initially, the character Eret helped Drago capture dragons, but he changed allegiances when he saw how cruel Drago was.
The first live-action movie based on “How to Train Your Dragon” made $636 million around the world. The entire movie series, which is based on Cressida Cowell’s popular books, has earned more than $2.2 billion worldwide.
The sequel to How to Train Your Dragon is being made now and will be in theaters on June 11, 2027.
