As a huge fantasy reader, I’m pretty sure most of us know Brandon Sanderson by now, and if you don’t, you really should! He’s been writing for over 20 years, and his two most popular series are probably The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn. But here’s the exciting news: Apple TV+ is going to be adapting both of those series into shows, and honestly, we Sanderson fans are so hyped – and have a lot to say about it!
Apple TV has secured the rights to adapt Brandon Sanderson’s epic Cosmere universe, which includes popular series like Stormlight Archive and Mistborn. The streamer plans to start with these two titles, turning Mistborn into a movie and Stormlight Archive into a TV series. The deal, described by The Hollywood Reporter as “unprecedented,” gives Sanderson a remarkable level of creative control. He will not only write and produce these adaptations, but also serve as a consultant and have final approval over how his stories are brought to the screen.
Fans of Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive and Mistborn are particularly excited about the level of creative control he’s secured, something even authors like J.K. Rowling and George R.R. Martin didn’t have over the adaptations of Harry Potter and A Song of Ice and Fire. Sanderson shared a The Hollywood Reporter article about the Apple TV deal on his X account, and many users responded with positive feedback about the arrangement.

Brandon Sanderson is no stranger to seeing his work adapted for the screen. He famously finished the Wheel of Time series after its original author, Robert Jordan, passed away, at the request of Jordan’s wife and editor, Harriet McDougal. While The Wheel of Time was turned into a TV show on Prime Video, it was unfortunately cancelled after three seasons. Now, with Sanderson directly involved, fans are hoping the upcoming adaptations of The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn will have a longer run, if approved.
The Cosmere is a universe born from a tragic event: the killing of a powerful being named Adonalsium by seventeen individuals. After Adonalsium’s power was broken into sixteen pieces, called Shards, all but one of the killers took a Shard and went to different planets. On these worlds, they either created magic or strengthened existing magical systems. Two popular series within the Cosmere are The Stormlight Archive, set on the world of Roshar, and Mistborn, which takes place on Scadrial. Both series are still being written, and the Mistborn story is currently told through different periods called Eras.
The partnership between Brandon Sanderson and Apple TV to adapt his Cosmere universe is off to a promising beginning. Sanderson is a hugely popular author with a dedicated following, and the upcoming Mistborn and Stormlight Archive movies and TV shows have the potential to become major global hits, similar to his novels.
