Since the 1970s, countless fads have appeared and disappeared, but the Chia Pet has remained surprisingly popular. First introduced in 1977, these terracotta figurines have become a familiar sight in homes worldwide. Now, the beloved Chia Pets are leaping from shelves to the silver screen with a new movie in development.
Adam Jay Epstein, along with producers Ari Daniel Pinchot and Jonathan Rubenstein, now own the rights to the Chia Pet brand. They plan to develop an animated movie or TV series based on it. The team at Rakia Media and Crystal City is also looking for partners to help them maximize the brand’s potential for both business and storytelling.

We’ve carried Chia Pets for years and are excited to help the brand reach a wider audience,” said Epstein. “We’re looking forward to people experiencing the world of Chia in theaters and on screens everywhere.
What Would A Chia Pets Movie Look Like?

As a movie and TV buff, I’ve always been a little fascinated by Chia Pets! For anyone who doesn’t know, they’re these cute little pottery figures – often animals, but also characters from shows and films. You plant seeds in them, and the seeds sprout to become their ‘hair’ or ‘fur’. It’s hilarious! The Bob Ross one grows a full afro, and they’ve made them of Alf, Jason Voorhees, Marge Simpson, and even Garfield. But some of the best ones are really clever – like Papa Smurf’s beard, Leonardo from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ shell, and my personal favorite, Homer Simpson recreating that iconic scene where he walks into the hedges!
So, what would a Chia Pets movie or cartoon actually look like? If they used the classic animal designs, you can imagine the possibilities. The terracotta base and bright green ‘fur’ are instantly recognizable and would translate well to animation. With the right voice actors and a good story, it could be a really fun way to build on the Chia Pets brand. Plus, featuring some of the most popular Chia Pet characters in the movie would be a great addition.
The idea would also work well in a live-action film, particularly if it had a feel similar to ‘Toy Story,’ where the Chia Pets are secretly alive and the humans don’t know it. That could be really fun, and it’ll be interesting to see how the company develops the franchise going forward.
