Bridgerton star reflects on what it means to be part of the show’s East Asian representation: “It’s pretty monumental”

Katie Leung, famous for playing Cho Chang in the Harry Potter movies and for her roles in Annika and Nightsleeper, is joining the cast of Bridgerton for its highly anticipated fourth season on Netflix.

Leung plays Lady Araminta Gun, a complicated character who initially makes a bad impression on her cousin Michaela (Masali Baduza) by mistreating her stepdaughter, Sophie (Yerin Ha).

As I learned more about these two women, the story of how they met unfolded. It turns out Araminta eventually hired Sophie to live and work with her as a maid – it was fascinating to discover the details of their initial connection and how that relationship developed.

Though they don’t immediately feel like a tightly-knit family, the arrival of Leung’s Araminta, Ha’s Sophie, and Araminta’s daughters Rosamund (Michelle Mao) and Posy (Isabella Wei) marks a new direction for Bridgerton. They are the show’s first family of East Asian descent to take center stage.

Ha will star as Bridgerton’s first East Asian romantic lead, which is a significant achievement for television. This casting demonstrates that period dramas are becoming more inclusive and open to featuring actors from diverse backgrounds in leading roles.

But what does it mean to Leung to also be part of such storytelling?

As we continue to witness these changes, we’ll move closer to a future with greater happiness and fairness for everyone.

Leung has previously discussed the racist experiences she faced after being cast as Cho Chang in the Harry Potter movies in 2005.

In an interview with The Guardian, the actress reflected on her younger years, saying she wasn’t sure if anything could have made things simpler back then. She explained that as a young person, she was naturally curious and remembers constantly searching for information about herself online. She added that no one could have prevented her from doing so, as she was old enough to make her own decisions.

While Leung has recently worked on projects like the voice acting for Arcane and roles in shows such as The Peripheral, The Chemistry of Death, and The Wheel of Time, starring in Bridgerton marks a significant move for her into historical dramas set in the Regency period.

In the first part of Bridgerton Season 4, Araminta is focused on finding husbands for her daughters, and she doesn’t seem to care much for Sophie. However, the season ends on a cliffhanger, leaving Araminta’s fate uncertain – we’re eagerly awaiting the next installment to find out what happens!
