One of 2027’s Most Anticipated Movie Sequels Just Added a Ted Lasso Star (And It’s the Perfect Role)

The recent live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon surprised many by successfully recreating the magic of the original animated film with stunning visuals. It was a huge hit with both audiences and critics, earning $636 million worldwide and praise for its actors and director. This success has confirmed plans for three movies, promising to continue the story of Hiccup (Mason Thames) and Toothless as faithfully as the original. Work on the second film is already well underway, with Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (from Severance) cast as the villain, Drago Bludvist. Now, the film has added another well-known actor from the popular series Ted Lasso to play a key role.

Phil Dunster is now part of the cast of How to Train Your Dragon 2, taking on the role of Eret, son of Eret. Eret, originally voiced by Kit Harington in the 2014 sequel, is a confident and talented dragon hunter who believes he’s the best. In the movie, he works for Drago Bludvist, a powerful leader building an army of dragons to threaten the peaceful village of Berk. Eret is important to the story because he first clashes with Hiccup and Astrid (Nico Parker), but later changes from an enemy into a trusted friend and ally.

After Ted Lasso‘s Jamie, Phil Dunster Is the Perfect Choice for Eret

Phil Dunster is well-known for playing Jamie Tartt in the popular series Ted Lasso, earning an Emmy nomination for his performance. At the start of the Apple TV+ show, Jamie came across as a selfish and arrogant soccer player who often clashed with others. But over three seasons, the character had a remarkable transformation, becoming a caring and sensitive leader. This journey – going from boastful and showy to truly heroic – is similar to the character arc of Eret in the How to Train Your Dragon films. By casting Dunster in How to Train Your Dragon 2, the filmmakers are utilizing an actor who has already proven he can expertly play the “lovable jerk” type of character.

The cast for the new film includes returning actors like Thames, Parker, Gerard Butler (as Stoick the Vast), Nick Frost (as Gobber), Julian Dennison (as Fishlegs), Gabriel Howell (as Snotlout), Bronwyn James (as Ruffnut), and Harry Trevaldwyn (as Tuffnut). Joining them is Juno Temple, known for her role in Ted Lasso, and Cate Blanchett, who will once again voice the character of Valka, Hiccup’s mother. Dean DeBlois is back as director and writer, ensuring the film stays true to the franchise’s vision. DeBlois and producer Marc Platt are combining real Viking ships with cutting-edge digital effects to bring the world of dragons and naval battles to life.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 11, 2027.
