Kurt Russell’s busy schedule couldn’t keep him out of The Madison.
Russell shared how Taylor Sheridan and Michelle Pfeiffer helped him stay on the show despite a scheduling issue. Pfeiffer will star as Stacy Clyburn in Sheridan’s new Paramount+ series, The Madison, playing a woman who relocates her family to Montana after a loss. Russell will play her husband, Preston, and will be featured in the first season.
Russell recently told Entertainment Weekly that he was filming both The Madison and season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters simultaneously. To work around this busy schedule, Taylor Sheridan and Michelle Pfeiffer made an agreement with Paramount to film Russell’s scenes for season 1 at the very beginning of the show’s second season’s production. Here’s what Russell had to say about it:
I worked on the second season of the Apple TV show Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Unfortunately, that conflicted with the timing of the Madison project, and I had to decline because I was already committed to the show.
I recently learned how the show’s plans shifted behind the scenes. Originally, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jonathan Taylor convinced Paramount+ to expand from a single season to two. But then, they decided to prioritize getting Kurt Russell involved. Instead of immediately starting season two, they filmed all of his scenes first, essentially creating a standalone ‘season’ for his character. They then plan to integrate that footage into the larger narrative before continuing with what would have been season two. It was a clever way to make sure they got Kurt’s contribution in there and keep the story flowing.
It appears Kevin Costner’s busy schedule played a role in getting the second season of The Madison approved. The first season, which has six episodes – the fewest of any Taylor Sheridan series – was filmed between August and December 2024. The second season, filmed from September to December 2025, included scenes filmed with Costner from the first season.
Fans will soon see how packed John Boyega’s schedule is with the release of two new shows. Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters starts February 27th, and The Madison premieres on March 14th, just two weeks after. Because he’s a key part of both series, Boyega had to carefully manage his time to be able to appear in both.
The main cast of The Madison features Patrick J. Adams, Matthew Fox, Beau Garrett, and Amiah Miller. Will Arnett will also appear as a guest star. John Russell will play a significant role as the father of the Clyburn family, but the details of his character and his connection to Stacy, played by Pfeiffer, haven’t been revealed yet.
Taylor Sheridan has a growing number of shows on Paramount+, and his latest, The Madison, joins hits like Landman, Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown, and Lioness. This new series is coming shortly before Sheridan finishes his contract with the studio in January 2029, when he’ll be moving to NBCUniversal.
Russell’s character is central to the story of The Madison, and the production team went to great lengths to accommodate his schedule. Because his role is so important, Taylor Sheridan and Nicole Pfeiffer made sure he could still be part of the show. Viewers will soon understand just how significant his character is, as the premiere is only a month away.
The Madison premieres Saturday, March 14 on Paramount+.
