The new anime series taking over from My Hero Academia nearly made its main character a carbon copy of the original, Deku. Deku, whose real name is Izuku Midoriya, stands out as a different kind of hero – he’s more of a quiet, thoughtful character, which is refreshing for the action-focused ‘shonen’ genre. However, the show seems to be falling into the same predictable pattern as many others, turning him into a typical powerful hero. The series initially suggested a more original approach, hinting that Deku would become a hero through skill and determination, not just raw power. But that idea changed when he was granted a remarkably strong ability.
The anime My Hero Academia: Vigilantes feels like a return to the original spirit of the series, focusing on a hero whose abilities aren’t traditionally powerful. Koichi, the main character, wants to make a difference, and his journey as a vigilante embodies that initial idea. However, recent developments in the second season have significantly strengthened Koichi’s quirk. While impressive, this power boost risks making him too similar to the main series’ hero, Deku, and could diminish what makes Vigilantes unique.
My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Almost Turned Koichi Into Deku’s Copy

Both main characters in My Hero Academia have a lot in common – they’re both bookish, shy, and huge fans of All Might. The biggest difference is that Koichi doesn’t get the same incredible chance as Deku. His initial quirk was better suited for a support role, fitting the idea of a vigilante the show explores. However, starting in the second season, Koichi’s quirk has become stronger, now allowing him to deflect attacks in a way similar to how Deku uses his fingers and fists. This has hinted that Koichi could become as powerful as Deku, and the most recent episode seems to confirm that possibility.
In My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Season 2, Episode 4, “A Rational Man,” Koichi nearly defeats a villain while powering up for a strong attack. However, it’s revealed his quirk is better suited for enhancing thrown objects, like rocks, rather than directly fighting enemies. Though fans might have hoped for a powerful victory, Koichi’s character was never intended to be a typical, overwhelmingly strong hero.
Making Koichi too similar to Deku would undermine what makes the Vigilantes series special. The show explores the darker side of a world with superpowers, focusing on flawed, street-level heroes instead of overwhelming power. While Koichi’s recent power boost has deepened his character, he won’t reach Deku’s level of strength. However, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes will likely give him a satisfying heroic moment, establishing him as a strong hero in his own right while Deku is unavailable.
