Following the passing of Shirley Raines, the founder of Beauty 2 The Streetz and a dedicated advocate for people experiencing homelessness, the Grammy-winning artist shared a tearful tribute to Shirley’s positive influence.
Lizzo shared the sad news that Shirley Raines, the founder of Beauty2theStreetz and a beloved community leader, passed away last night. In a video posted to Instagram, Lizzo said she was heartbroken, explaining that Shirley was a consistent and valued partner in her annual Juneteenth charitable events.
Lizzo remembered being able to publicly celebrate Shirley, a TikTok creator known for showcasing her community work in Los Angeles’ Skid Row and Nevada, and shared how she was able to support Shirley’s efforts firsthand.
Lizzo noticed a friend was dedicated to helping people experiencing homelessness, specifically by bringing beauty and a sense of worth to Skid Row and other communities. She would give makeovers, haircuts, and clothes, and Lizzo jokingly overheard people saying they were wearing her designs. It made Lizzo realize she had far too many clothes and could contribute to this meaningful work.
Lizzo shared that Shirley, 58, once told her how much she appreciated Lizzo’s work, especially when her clothes were really popular.
I sent everything I could, and even asked Yitty to contribute. She told me that I’d really made plus-size women happy and that they were feeling confident and stylish.
In addition to Shirley’s contributions to the community, Lizzo spoke movingly about their close personal connection.

She consistently reached out to support me during difficult times. Even when people were critical of me, she remained a constant source of encouragement and never asked for anything in return. She’d send loving messages to lift my spirits, and always offered support without expecting anything back.
The musician said people like her are truly exceptional and should be cherished. He also expressed his gratitude for having the chance to celebrate her while she was still with us.
Lizzo encouraged her followers to look up to Shirley and continue her mission of giving back.
With tears in her eyes, she shared how Shirley dedicated herself to helping those who were overlooked and made people who felt unimportant feel valued. “We’ll deeply miss her, and we’ll need her guidance,” she said, adding, “I’m heartbroken that she’s no longer with us.”
