Ubisoft recently gave employees in Paris the choice to accept a layoff package, which would affect around 200 people. In protest, French unions Solidaires Informatique, STVJV, and CFE CGC are urging Ubisoft Paris employees to stage a walkout if CEO Yves Guillemot comes to the office.
According to a report from Le Figaro (via GamesRadar), a notice circulated among Ubisoft employees encouraged them to leave their workstations and meet outside the Paris office when CEO Yves Guillemot arrives on February 3rd.
The pamphlet states it’s time to let our boss know he’s not welcome here if he keeps mistreating employees. It urges Ubisoft Paris staff to walk out and gather outside if Yves Guillemot enters the office.
French unions are protesting Ubisoft for the second time this month. After Ubisoft announced significant changes, including canceling some projects, the union Solidaires Informatique organized a half-day strike on January 22nd. They called the changes damaging and asked Ubisoft to give employees fair raises this year, stop cutting costs, and continue to allow remote work options.
The tech workers’ union, Solidaires Informatique, announced a half-day strike as a first response to what they see as unreasonable decisions from management. They stated that further strikes are being considered and emphasized their refusal to allow leadership to worsen working conditions. The union also suggested that Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot should remember that the company’s employees are the ones who create its games.
Ubisoft has cancelled five projects as part of a large restructuring effort, including the highly anticipated remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The company says this reset is intended to help them regain creative control and achieve long-term, stable growth.
We’re reorganizing into five creative teams, called “Creative Houses,” each specializing in particular game series or types of games. For example, Creative House 1 (CH1), known as Vantage Studios, will develop games in the Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed, and Rainbow Six universes. Meanwhile, Creative House 4 (CH4) will concentrate on fantasy and story-focused franchises, including Anno, Prince of Persia, Rayman, and Beyond Good and Evil, as well as other titles.
Ubisoft also revealed they’re developing four brand new game franchises. One of these is March of Giants, which they recently obtained from Amazon Games.
Surprisingly, Beyond Good and Evil 2 was one of the few projects spared from recent cancellations. It’s been in development for over ten years, and Ubisoft confirmed it’s still a key focus for them, with development now handled by Creative House 4.
Investors reacted negatively to the announcement, causing the company’s stock price to drop more than 30% on the day it was made. Although the stock is gradually increasing in value, it currently stands at €4.75 per share, a decrease from its pre-announcement price of €5.23.
