Anime Producer Confirms Netflix/MAPPA Partnership Changed Everything

Streaming services are clearly putting a lot of money into anime, and the popularity of the art form continues to grow. Netflix recently announced a partnership with Studio MAPPA to create original anime series. MAPPA has quickly become one of the biggest names in anime, producing hits like Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, Hell’s Paradise, and the final season of Attack on Titan, among many others. A producer from TV Asahi, a leading Japanese network for anime, recently stated that this collaboration will fundamentally change the anime industry.

Hiromichi Shizume, who used to produce shows for TV Asahi, believes that traditional TV can’t fully support the growth of anime anymore. He anticipates more anime studios will partner with streaming services. He explained that the global market offers much larger budgets, allowing for higher-quality, more ambitious projects designed for international audiences from the start. He suggests that if streaming platforms offer better pay and creative freedom, they’ll become the primary producers of hit anime, potentially reducing revenue for traditional television stations.

A Match Made in Anime Heaven

After announcing their new partnership, MAPPA President Manabu Otsuka explained that while they’ve worked with Netflix before, this collaboration is built on MAPPA’s desire to remain creatively and financially independent. He believes Japanese animation studios need to take the lead in all areas – understanding what audiences worldwide want, creating projects, getting those projects seen, and growing their business. MAPPA is looking forward to a strong, lasting, and mutually beneficial relationship with Netflix.

Netflix VP Kata Sakamoto commented on the recent news, praising MAPPA as a studio that consistently pushes boundaries and delivers innovative anime. Sakamoto emphasized Netflix’s commitment to supporting passionate creators like those at MAPPA. She believes that combining MAPPA’s creative approach with Netflix’s global platform and willingness to take risks will unlock even greater potential for anime, bringing exciting new content to fans worldwide.

While Netflix and MAPPA haven’t announced any new projects together yet, MAPPA is currently very busy. They have two anime series—the third season of Jujutsu Kaisen and the second season of Hell’s Paradise—streaming now on Crunchyroll. Plus, a highly anticipated return is coming to Netflix later this year with the second season of Dorohedoro, which will bring viewers back to its unique world of magic and lizard-headed characters. However, fans will have to wait until 2026 to see it.
