Charli XCX‘s chains of love for her past music will never break.
Kim Petras’s 2024 album, Brat, created a fun, energetic vibe for the summer, but her music has changed quite a bit since her earlier work, True Romance, from 2013.
As for how she’d describe the moody era in her life?
Okay, so I was at the ‘Wuthering Heights‘ premiere – can you believe it?! – and I got to hear Charli talk to Will Marfuggi from TopMob News! She was asked about this whole teenage emo thing, and honestly, she wasn’t really feeling it. But she did say, and I quote, that she’s totally into the ‘tortured romantic’ vibe. Like, yes, queen, that’s what we all want! It was amazing.
Her first album, a blend of gothic and pop sounds, captured the intense emotions – both the pain and joy – of a difficult relationship.
She felt prepared to express a new side of herself through the songs she wrote for the film based on Emily Brontë’s work—and the accompanying album. She credits director Emerald Fennell with guiding her in that process.
The Grammy winner said everything she needed to know was right there in the writing. She described the author’s take on the story as deeply emotional – romantic, painful, and incredibly raw.
Collaborating with John Cale, who appears on the album, was key to helping her develop her unique style. She explained that she was inspired by his way of speaking about music – often both beautiful and harsh – and used that as a starting point for her own approach.
Everyone was surprised to learn she was in the movie, which features Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. It all started when she received a text message from an unfamiliar number – it was Emerald!

Charli shared on her Substack in November that receiving the script from the director—whom she’d met only once—came as a surprise, but she was immediately hooked. She’d heard rumors the director was adapting Wuthering Heights, and when the script arrived, she read it right away.
I was in London, and it was a really cold, gloomy time of year – it got dark around 4 p.m., which seemed to match how I was feeling,” she explained. “I started getting lost in a new vision of Wuthering Heights, and suddenly I felt… a spark of inspiration.
When the pair finally spoke on the phone, Emerald initially suggested a song for the film.

Charli explained she’d jokingly suggested making an album, thinking, ‘Why not?’ She wanted to create a strong, distinct character and a world that felt intensely honest, untamed, sensual, dark, and distinctly British – a world where people actually spoke in complete sentences, with proper grammar and punctuation.
And she loved the idea of stepping away from brat for a little while.
She described the new environment as a stark contrast to the life she’d known for the past two and a half years, and a feeling of liberation washed over her. It was completely different – no cigarettes, no sunglasses – from her current reality, and she was fully embracing it.
Wuthering Heights premieres in theaters Feb. 13.
