Last year, Quentin Tarantino released his extended cut of Kill Bill, but he also made headlines for his comments about Paul Dano’s performance in There Will Be Blood. Known for directing films like Reservoir Dogs, Jackie Brown, and Pulp Fiction, Tarantino wasn’t impressed with Dano’s work. Ever since, fans have wondered if Dano, who played the Riddler in The Batman, would respond. He finally has, and his response is quite different from Tarantino’s original criticism – and many believe it gives Dano the upper hand in what started as a one-sided disagreement.
At a celebration for the 20th anniversary of Little Miss Sunshine at the Sundance Film Festival, Paul Dano talked about a recent criticism from Quentin Tarantino. Dano expressed his appreciation for the positive online reaction he received, saying the support meant more to him than having to respond himself. He was grateful people defended him, so he didn’t have to. Interestingly, Dano’s Little Miss Sunshine co-star, Toni Collette, was much more critical of Tarantino, saying, “Are we really going there? Forget that guy! He must have been on something… it was just bizarre. What kind of behavior is that?”
The Dano/Tarantino War Explained

Quentin Tarantino previously criticized Paul Dano’s acting in There Will Be Blood, feeling he didn’t measure up to Daniel Day-Lewis. He believed the film was intended as a showcase for two lead actors, but Dano’s performance wasn’t strong enough to create that dynamic. Tarantino felt Day-Lewis completely overshadowed Dano and suggested Austin Butler would have been a better fit for the role, characterizing Dano as uninteresting and lacking the strength needed to effectively contrast with Day-Lewis’s powerful performance. He argued the film itself needed a strong co-lead, even if Day-Lewis didn’t.
Quentin Tarantino had intended to make another film, titled The Movie Critic, but reportedly decided against it, even though it was once considered his final project. Now, he’s working on The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a spin-off based on his movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Tarantino is writing the screenplay, but David Fincher will direct this new project for Netflix.
Okay, so everyone’s wondering about Paul Dano’s Riddler. Will we see him back for the next Batman movie? After surviving his run-in with Robert Pattinson’s Batman in the first film, it’s definitely a possibility. And things are really heating up in Gotham! Word on the street is we might be seeing the Penguin, the Joker, and Two-Face all causing trouble. It sounds like Batman’s going to have his hands full, to say the least!
