The Rambo movies have proven incredibly resilient, much like the iconic character himself. Starting with the serious and thought-provoking First Blood in 1982, the series transformed into a high-octane action spectacle over five films. Sylvester Stallone’s portrayal of Rambo delivered non-stop thrills and explosions, and just when it seemed the story had ended, another movie appeared. While 2019’s Rambo: Last Blood was thought to be the final chapter, a new installment is now in production.
The newest Rambo film, simply titled John Rambo, is breaking new ground in two ways: a new actor will play the lead role, and the story will go back to Rambo’s beginnings. Noah Centineo, known for his roles in Warfare and the upcoming Street Fighter, will take over the iconic part, showing audiences how Rambo became the legendary “one-man fighting force.” Adding to the excitement, Jalmari Helander, the director behind the films Sisu and Sisu: Road to Revenge, is at the helm. Now that production has begun, the first images from the movie have been revealed, along with the full cast list.
John Rambo Prequel Movie Confirms Cast as Filming Starts

Lionsgate, Millennium Media, and AGBO have announced a new John Rambo film that will explore the character’s backstory, showing events that happened years before the original First Blood. The screenplay is being written by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani, the writers of Black Adam. Filming will take place in various locations throughout Thailand, including Bangkok, Krabi, Phang Nga, and Kanchanaburi.
Filming for the new John Rambo movie has announced the supporting cast alongside Centineo, including Yao (known for Sinners), Jason Tobin (A Thousand Blows), Quincy Isaiah (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty), Jefferson White (Yellowstone), and Tayme Thapthimthong (The White Lotus).
I remember being eleven years old and seeing First Blood for the first time – it seriously changed my life. Rambo wasn’t just a movie I enjoyed; it stuck with me throughout my childhood and was a huge reason I wanted to become a director. Now, as we start making this new film, we’re going right back to the beginning of John Rambo’s story. We’re aiming for something really stripped-down, raw, and authentic – a pure survival story about how far someone will go, never giving up, and the loss of innocence. It’s a real honor to be able to shape this next part of his journey, respecting everything that came before, and show audiences how it all began.
Angela Russo-Otstot of AGBO shared that they’re excited to bring back a beloved character and trust Noah and Jalmari to do him justice. Early filming suggests this new installment of the Rambo story will be impactful and stay true to what fans love.
Producers Kevin King Templeton and Les Weldon explained they’re being careful to honor the history of John Rambo as they create his origin story. They believe director Jalmari Helander is bringing a focused approach to the film, and Noah Scott brings both the physical strength and the emotional depth needed to play the character convincingly. They see the director and actor as a great team.
Look, I know a lot of Rambo fans are going to be hesitant about anyone but Stallone taking on the role, and that’s understandable. But honestly, I think we’re in good hands with Jalmari Helander. The guy directed Sisu, and those movies were phenomenal – real crowd-pleasers for action fans. In fact, Sisu has a 94% and 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – higher than any of the Rambo films, believe it or not. So, while it’s a change, I’m cautiously optimistic that Helander can deliver the action we expect.
