Nintendo Responds to GameCube Games Leak on Switch 2 (But It’s Confusing)

Nintendo has addressed a recent leak suggesting that more GameCube games would be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. A few days ago, Walmart briefly posted a picture online indicating that Pikmin 2 and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes would be added to the list of GameCube titles available to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers on the Switch 2. The image looked like official Nintendo promotional material, making the leak seem credible. However, Nintendo has now stated that the listing was posted in error.

Nintendo has confirmed to IGN that Pikmin 2 and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes won’t be added to the Nintendo Switch Online service right now. While the image showing these games originally came from Nintendo and was the source of a Walmart leak, Nintendo says the games weren’t intended to be included in the promotional materials, as they are not planned for release on Switch Online.

Nintendo mistakenly showed a retailer an image of upcoming GameCube ‘Nintendo Classics’ games that included titles not currently scheduled for release. Nintendo has removed the image and apologized for the mix-up.

These GameCube Games Still May Release on Switch 2

Nintendo’s comments about this are a little unclear. They haven’t completely said that Pikmin 2 and Metroid Prime 2 won’t be available on Switch Online, only that they haven’t been announced yet. This leaves the possibility open for them to add these games later. It’s possible the recent promotional image was correct, and Nintendo just announced the games’ availability too early.

Even if Pikmin 2 and Metroid Prime 2 don’t appear on Nintendo Switch Online, it’s not a total loss. Pikmin 2 is already available on Switch as part of the Pikmin 1+2 remastered collection. Plus, rumors suggest a remastered version of Metroid Prime 2 could come to Switch eventually. And even if that doesn’t happen, fans can still enjoy the original Metroid Prime and the recently released Metroid Prime 4: Beyond on Switch, which should offer a similar experience.
