While Orlando Bloom is famous for his role as Legolas in The Lord of the Rings, he played another skilled archer just a year later. In the 2004 film Troy, his character was actually less proficient with a bow and arrow than Paris.
The 2004 movie Troy is based on the classic story of The Iliad by Homer, which comes before the tale of The Odyssey. Speaking of The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan, the director of many acclaimed films, is planning to make a new adaptation. Troy tells the story of the legendary Trojan War and focuses on the Greek hero Achilles, played by Brad Pitt. The film also features Orlando Bloom as a skilled archer, a role many consider even more impressive than his famous character, Legolas.
Orlando Bloom Played Another Great Archer in Troy
Only a year after finishing the Lord of the Rings trilogy in 2003, Orlando Bloom played another talented archer in the movie Troy. Some viewers even felt his character in Troy was a better shot than his famous elf, Legolas. Troy, released in 2004, tells the story of a Trojan prince who begins a war by taking Queen Helen of Sparta (played by Diane Kruger). He and his fellow Trojans must then defend their city against a massive Greek army determined to rescue their queen.
Paris is a cunning and often dishonest fighter who will do whatever it takes to win. Despite these tactics, he’s a very capable warrior. As a skilled archer, Paris is a key fighter for Troy in their war against the Greeks. He famously kills , a warrior previously believed to be invincible.
When Achilles was a baby, his mother tried to make him immortal by dipping him into the River Styx. This gave him amazing strength, speed, and protection in battle. However, she held onto his heel, leaving that one spot unprotected. Later, during the Trojan War, Paris shot an arrow that hit Achilles in his heel – his only vulnerable area – and killed him.
Even a master archer would have found that shot incredibly difficult. Some might say fate intervened to help Paris hit Achilles, but he still made the shot happen. Though Legolas is more famous, Orlando Bloom considers Paris of Troy his most accomplished archery character.
Will Orlando Bloom Ever Play Legolas Again?
Although Orlando Bloom has said he’s finished playing Legolas in the Lord of the Rings universe, there’s still a chance he could return to the role. Legolas became a fan favorite after appearing in the original trilogy, and director Peter Jackson liked the character so much he brought Bloom back for The Hobbit films, even though Legolas isn’t actually in the book. Jackson felt Legolas hadn’t had enough screen time initially.
Even though The Hobbit finished over ten years ago, we might still see more of Legolas in the future. Andy Serkis is directing a new Lord of the Rings film, The Hunt for Gollum, planned for release in 2027. The movie will bring back several original actors, including Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo, and Aragorn is also likely to make an appearance.
Given the return of many original actors, it’s very possible Orlando Bloom will be involved too. Like his fellow cast members, Bloom has stayed connected with the Lord of the Rings fanbase and has repeatedly expressed interest in revisiting the franchise. If they can find a way to include his character, Legolas, in the story, Bloom would almost certainly be eager to reprise the role.
Orlando Bloom is likely to always be remembered for playing archers in movies. Whether people think Legolas or Paris of Troy is the better archer, both roles are incredibly famous and stand out in his impressive career.
The Lord of the Rings is available to stream on HBO Max.
