I’m so excited! One of Christopher Nolan’s go-to comedies is coming to a streaming service I already love. It’s Will Forte’s movie, and I can’t wait to watch it whenever I want!
Good news for fans of the 2010 comedy MacGruber! Both the original movie and the unrated cut will be available to stream on HBO Max starting February 1st.
Jorma Taccone directed and co-wrote the comedy MacGruber, with help from John Solomon and Will Forte. The film stars Forte as the inept special agent MacGruber, who must recover a stolen nuclear warhead. The cast also includes Kristen Wiig as Vicki, Ryan Phillippe as Lieutenant Piper, and Maya Rudolph as Casey.
When MacGruber came out in 2010, it was almost universally disliked by both critics and moviegoers. Even though the MacGruber sketches were popular on Saturday Night Live and the film featured a large and well-known cast, it only made $9.3 million at the box office despite costing $10 million to produce.
Currently, the movie MacGruber has a low score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics giving it a 47% rating based on over 150 reviews. Even more surprisingly, audiences seem to dislike it even more, giving it just a 36% score on the site’s “Popcornmeter” based on more than 1,000 reviews from verified viewers.
In 2021, Forte, Wiig, and Phillippe were able to reprise their roles in a new MacGruber series. Though it only ran for one season, the show was a critical success, earning an 85% “Certified Fresh” rating and an 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The cast also included Sam Elliott, Laurence Fishburne, and Billy Zane.
What MacGruber Himself Thinks of the Character’s Legacy
In a 2023 interview with Total Film, Will Forte expressed continued pride in the MacGruber movie, saying he and the cast were still “super proud” of their work. He also mentioned the surprisingly unknown MacGruber series on Peacock, adding, “How lucky were we to get to have that experience again?”
In 2025, after the film’s disappointing release, he reflected on its poor performance, saying, “It really flopped. It was a rough couple of weeks, but my collaborators—John Solomon, Jorma Taccone, and I—got together and decided we were still proud of what we’d created. We decided to just move on.”
Despite not being a hit when it first came out, the movie MacGruber has gained a dedicated following over time. Interestingly, director Christopher Nolan is a fan. Actress Anne Hathaway shared in an interview while promoting The Dark Knight that she used to be nervous around Nolan, but she learned she could gauge his mood by whether he started quoting lines from MacGruber.
The director told Vanity Fair that he asked Christopher Nolan to attend a read-through of the show’s pilot episode. Nolan couldn’t make it, but he sent a fantastic email that the director described as ‘stellar’ and a great way to begin the read-through.
MacGruber and MacGruber: Unrated will be available for streaming on HBO Max on Feb. 1.
