PlayStation Portal With OLED Display Coming Out This Year – Rumor

Sony is pleased with the success of the PlayStation Portal, having sold two million units in the US. Recent reports suggest they’re already planning an updated version of the handheld streaming device, potentially releasing it later this year. According to industry source KeplerL2, sales have been strong enough to warrant a hardware refresh.

The updated PS Portal will likely function similarly to the original – you’ll still need a PS5 to stream games to it. However, the new version is expected to have a much better OLED screen, replacing the current LCD screen. It’s unclear if the resolution or how smoothly the games appear on screen will also be improved.

The PlayStation Portal, released in November 2023, has surprisingly become quite popular, even though it only lets you play games by streaming them. Sony has been regularly updating the device, and a November update was a significant step forward – it now allows users to stream games directly over the internet without needing a PlayStation 5 console connected to their home network.

The update includes several new features, such as 3D Audio compatibility with PlayStation Link devices, and the convenience of browsing and purchasing games right from the PlayStation Store.

Honestly, updates for the PS Portal have really made it shine – it’s become the best way to use PlayStation’s Remote Play, in my opinion. I was surprised to hear from Takuro Fushimi, a product manager at PlayStation, that people were actually using the Portal more than their PS5s back in November! It’s cool to see so many people enjoying it.

Before the Portal came out, some people weren’t sure anyone would want it, because it’s a pretty unusual device – specifically designed for remote play. But we’ve been amazed by how much positive response we’ve gotten from the community.

Our research indicates that people who use PlayStation Portal are more actively involved with PlayStation compared to those who don’t. The PlayStation Portal is now the preferred way to use Remote Play with the PlayStation 5, becoming more popular than using mobile phones, the PS5 console itself, or the PS4.

It’s important to remember the PS Portal isn’t designed to be used on its own. It’s intended for players who already have a PS5 console. Sony’s Fushimi confirmed this, describing it as a device that “enhances the console experience” rather than replacing it. This might evolve, though, if more people start streaming PS5 games through the cloud.

With this update, we want to give PS5 players more ways to have fun, encourage more people to try PlayStation Portal and PlayStation Plus, and keep existing PS5 players coming back for more.

According to data analyst Mat Piscatella from Circana, about 7% of PS5 owners in the US also purchased the Portal. With 27 million PS5 consoles sold in the country, the Portal has proven popular, becoming the best-selling gaming accessory in the US for 2024.
