God of War TV series adaptation casts its Odin and Thor – including a Homeland legend

Now that Ryan Hurst has been confirmed to play Kratos in the upcoming God of War series on Prime Video, more information is being revealed about the actors who will portray Odin and Thor in this mythical Viking saga.

It’s fitting that Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, an actor from Iceland – a country deeply connected to Norse mythology – will play Thor, the God of Thunder.

Ólafsson shared his excitement about the God of War games on Facebook, saying he’s a big fan and thrilled to be playing the role of the god of thunder. He called it a dream come true and expressed his eagerness to collaborate with the talented team behind the series.

According to Prime Video, Thor is a powerful and experienced warrior, physically imposing from years of fighting. However, he’s deeply troubled by the consequences of a past war that continues to affect him.

Before the game begins, Thor was a devoted Asgardian warrior and his father’s trusted advisor. However, throughout the game and its TV adaptation, he’s become a broken man, numbing his pain with alcohol and haunted by past losses. He’s distanced himself from his family, which has made him even more alone, though his incredible power still lies within him, waiting to be unleashed.

Mandy Patinkin, famous for playing Saul Berenson in Homeland, will be the voice of Odin, also known as the ‘All-Father’, and will wield his spear, Gungnir.

Prime Video portrays Odin as a god who doesn’t appear strong or traditionally divine. However, appearances are misleading – he’s actually the most powerful of the Aesir gods, a stern and commanding leader, and relentlessly pursues knowledge.

Kratos’ son, Atreus, learns that Odin is deeply suspicious, controlling, and a threat. He’ll stop at nothing to prevent Ragnarök, the prophesied end of the Norse world.

Both in the game and in the series, Odin “serves as a formidable antagonist to Kratos.”

Hurst, Ólafsson, and Patinkin are the latest additions to the cast of the God of War series, joining Teresa Palmer and Max Parker. However, since filming hasn’t started, it will be a while before we see them on screen.
