One of Marvel’s Worst Movie Villains is Actually the X-Men’s Greatest Success Story

Now that the X-Men are joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, many fans are revisiting the older Fox films, particularly the first three. The original X-Men and X2: X-Men United are decent, but X-Men 3: The Last Stand is widely considered a low point. The third film attempted to cram in too many characters, including the popular villain Juggernaut. Vinnie Jones played the role, but the portrayal was generally seen as a terrible version of the character, stripping away what made Juggernaut interesting and reducing him to a simple, strong brute – now mostly remembered for a popular internet meme.

As a huge X-Men fan, it really bothers me how Juggernaut has been treated recently. In the comics, he’s a major villain – one of their most important, actually! And it’s been amazing watching his story unfold over the last 61 years. Cain Marko has been a fantastic bad guy for ages, and the fact that he’s Professor X’s stepbrother just adds so much to the team’s history. He’s even gone toe-to-toe with powerhouses like the Hulk and Spider-Man! What’s really cool is how much he’s evolved. He’s not just a one-note villain anymore; he’s genuinely become a good guy, even an X-Man! Seeing him go from one of their biggest enemies to a full-fledged hero is a testament to the character, and honestly, I think he’s the best example of a villain successfully turning good within the X-Men universe.

Juggernaut’s Journey to Heroism Had Been Long and Winding

Juggernaut first appeared in the comic book X-Men #12. His origin story involves a complicated family history: his father married Charles Xavier’s mother and brought Cain Marko into Xavier’s life. Cain endured abuse from his father, who was also jealous of the smaller, more gifted Charles. Later, while serving in the military, Cain discovered a temple dedicated to the ancient god Cytorrak. This encounter transformed him into Cytorrak’s powerful earthly form, and he became an enemy of his stepbrother and the X-Men. Over the years, Juggernaut repeatedly clashed with the X-Men, sometimes as a member of villainous groups like the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and at other times as a hired mercenary alongside Black Tom Cassidy.

Over time, Juggernaut’s anger towards Professor X decreased as Cain Marko came to understand that his difficult childhood, stemming from his father’s abuse, was the real source of his problems, not Xavier’s intelligence. This eased their long-standing conflict, and Juggernaut began focusing his fights on heroes like Spider-Man (featuring a memorable storyline in The Amazing Spider-Man #229-230), the Hulk, Thor, and the Avengers. In the 2000s, writer Chuck Austen, whose work is often criticized, added Juggernaut to the X-Men team, beginning with Uncanny X-Men (Vol. 1) #410. While Austen’s run is generally unpopular, his portrayal of Cain Marko—especially his relationship with the character known as Sammy—is well-liked by fans. This was a significant shift for the character, and it encouraged readers to see Juggernaut in a new light.

During a certain period, fans really came to like the Juggernaut, so when he went back to being a villain, it felt off. He temporarily lost his powers to Colossus, but had changed as a person. Once he regained his abilities, he consciously battled the corrupting influence they had on him. Previously, he’d succumbed to that power, but he’d learned to resist it. Though he lost much of his strength, he recovered it by absorbing the energy from artifacts created by Cytorrak (as shown in the fantastic Juggernaut (Vol. 3) #1-5). He initially tried to join the nation of Krakoa but was rejected, and later, was finally accepted into Legion of X.

The Krakoa era significantly changed the X-Men, marking a major shift for many characters. This led to Juggernaut becoming a key player in events like “Fall of X” and joining Cyclops’s team in the current X-Men series. While the X-Men have often taken in former villains, most haven’t truly reformed – Magneto still holds dangerous beliefs, and Mystique remains untrustworthy. For every success story like Rogue, there’s a character like Sabretooth or Lady Mastermind who never fully changes. However, Juggernaut is different. He’s genuinely embraced heroism and dedicated himself to the X-Men’s cause. He avoids lethal force, stays out of trouble within the team (aside from some playful banter), and has even repaired his relationship with his brother. He’s become a surprisingly exemplary X-Man.

Juggernaut Has Become the Epitome of Redemption

It’s common for former villains to become heroes, and the X-Men comics have done this well, with Juggernaut being a prime example. Originally designed as an enemy with a personal connection to Professor X, he’s been successfully reimagined as a hero. While characters like Rogue and Magneto have also switched sides, Rogue was always intended to eventually join the X-Men, and Magneto, though now allied with them, still retains much of his original personality and could revert to villainy if he believes it’s best for mutantkind.

Cain Marko, once a straightforward villain, has truly transformed since joining the X-Men and befriending a young mutant. He’s developed a heart and become a genuine hero, now deeply committed to mutant rights and freedom. Reverting him to a villain would be a missed opportunity, as he’s become a far more compelling and ideal X-Man than he ever was – a long way from his initial, rough introduction involving Kitty Pryde.
