I’ve been watching anime for a long time, and there are certain adaptations that really stand out and push the whole medium forward. Think of the classic Studio Ghibli films, or more recently, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle – there are just so many examples. This year, a really big franchise is making a comeback, and the new trailer shows how the studio Science SARU is reimagining a beloved anime world. It’s interesting because this new version comes almost ten years after a live-action adaptation that a lot of fans weren’t thrilled with, so there’s a lot of hope this will get the franchise back on track.
I remember when a remake of Ghost in the Shell was first announced – it’s coming from the studio behind shows like Dandadan, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, and even Adventure Time! For anyone who doesn’t know the original, it started as a manga way back in 1989 and then became a really influential animated movie in 1995. That anime really set the standard for cyberpunk stories about technologically advanced, but troubled, futures. They just released a new trailer, and the remake is scheduled to premiere on TV in July.

The Ghost In The Shell Live-Action Failure

Live-action adaptations of anime used to have a bad reputation, but that’s changing, as shown by the success of Netflix’s One Piece. However, not all attempts have been successful. The 2017 film Ghost in the Shell, starring Scarlett Johansson as Major Kusanagi, is often cited as an example of a live-action adaptation that didn’t quite capture the spirit of the original manga and anime.
The movie tried to recreate the feel of the original cyberpunk story, but significant plot changes surprised and disappointed many anime fans. As a result, it didn’t get a sequel and is often considered a disappointment within the genre. Fortunately, the new anime series is a fresh start, staying much closer to the original source material. The animation, created by Science SARU, closely matches the art style of the manga’s creator, Masamune Shirow, unlike the previous live-action adaptation.
While many know Ghost in the Shell from the original anime movie, the story has continued in different forms. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex was its most prominent TV series, and despite receiving somewhat mixed reactions over its seasons, it showed that audiences still wanted to see fresh perspectives on the Ghost in the Shell universe.
