If creator Ira Parker has his way, the new series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could have a very long run, potentially longer than any other Game of Thrones show – and many other TV series as well. It’s the second spin-off from HBO’s Game of Thrones world, following House of the Dragon, and HBO is planning even more shows set in Westeros. Several other Game of Thrones projects are currently in development, including stories set in the past and even some that explore the future.
Good news for fans of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – a second season is definitely happening! I’m hearing it’s already in production and slated to hit HBO and Max in 2027. While we’re all hoping for a third season to complete the adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg – covering The Hedge Knight (Season 1), The Sworn Sword (Season 2), and The Mystery Knight (Season 3) – showrunner Parker has hinted at something even bigger. He recently told Esquire about his ambitious plans to potentially move beyond the currently published novellas, and honestly, it sounds fantastic!
I really hope George continues writing these stories. I’ve even suggested to HBO – with a little humor – that I’d love to do four or five seasons focusing on a young Egg. Then, after about ten years, we could do another four or five seasons with Dexter and Peter as they are now. Finally, after another ten years, we could show Egg as an adult. That way, the series could follow them throughout their entire lives, and mine as well.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms’ Plan Is Great – But Probably Won’t Happen

The plan for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – as Esquire points out, it would resemble the filmmaking style of Richard Linklater – is a bold one. In fact, it might be too ambitious, as even the author, George R.R. Martin, doubts it will be approved. However, it’s a commendable idea because, regardless of the challenges, it would be a fantastic way to bring these characters to life on screen.
Martin has currently written three stories about Dunk and Egg, but he’s said he’d eventually like to write twelve, covering their entire lives. We already know some major events from hints in Game of Thrones, the A Song of Ice and Fire books, and related materials. A TV series could expand on these stories and fill in many details, and it would be great to see them play out on screen. However, if the show only lasts three seasons, the characters might not get the satisfying conclusion they deserve.
Actually making this happen will be difficult. The show needs to be a big hit right away, and even then, getting the lead actors to return for two more series over the next three decades is a huge challenge. A lot could change in that time – their careers, the television industry – and it’s hard to predict what will happen. Successfully bringing it back would be a rare achievement, particularly for a popular franchise. While Parker hopes it’s possible, he admits it’s a long shot. However, considering the characters Dunk and Egg, they’re no strangers to overcoming difficult odds.
New episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms release Sundays at 10pm ET on HBO and HBO Max.
