During the Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023, Lucasfilm announced three new films: a movie directed by James Mangold called Dawn of the Jedi, a New Republic-era film by Dave Filoni, and New Jedi Order directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Almost three years later, though, none of these projects have made significant progress. Mangold’s film is stalled because of its unconventional story, New Jedi Order has gone through several script rewrites, and Filoni’s movie appears to be on hold while he takes on a new leadership role at Lucasfilm. However, recent rumors suggest we now have an update on where Filoni’s film currently stands.
A new report suggests that Dave Filoni’s planned movie set in the New Republic era isn’t confirmed. While it’s still being considered, Lucasfilm might turn it into a limited series on Disney+ if the upcoming The Mandalorian and Grogu movie doesn’t perform well in theaters. The report also indicates that a third season of Ahsoka hasn’t been officially approved and may not happen at all.
Will Dave Filoni’s New Republic Movie Happen?

We should be cautious about this recent news, as it’s currently just a rumor, but it seems plausible. The Mandalorian and Grogu could significantly influence which Star Wars movies Lucasfilm decides to make. This movie is a bit of a trial run for the studio, seeing if they can successfully move the stories established in their Disney+ shows to the big screen. If the film performs well at the box office, it will likely lead to more movies set in the same time period. However, if it doesn’t do as well as hoped, Lucasfilm might choose a different path for future Star Wars films.
As a huge fan, I found it really interesting to hear that Disney apparently told Tony Gilroy, the creator of Andor, that streaming isn’t working out. But at the same time, Lucasfilm is still making shows for Disney+! It seems like they’re leaning more towards big theatrical releases now, but they’re not ditching streaming altogether. I’ve been thinking, they could easily turn Dave Filoni’s massive MandoVerse crossover event into a limited series – a perfect way to tie up all the loose ends from The Mandalorian and Grogu and Ahsoka Season 2. Actually, they’ve done something similar before! Remember how they switched plans for Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi, turning potential movies into TV series? So, it’s definitely a strategy they’re willing to use again.
Okay, so here’s what I’m thinking about where Dave Filoni’s project is headed. It feels like Lucasfilm is building towards a real conclusion for this New Republic storyline we’ve been following. They’ve put a lot into it – bringing back Thrawn was a huge deal – and I don’t believe they’d just abandon all those threads. Filoni would definitely get the chance to tie everything up. Now, Disney has surprised us before, like with cancelling The Acolyte when it clearly had more story, but The Mandalorian and this whole era feel different. It’s been a long run, and The Mandalorian was the show that launched Disney+ – so I’m confident we’ll get a satisfying ending one way or another.
It’ll be interesting to see how well The Mandalorian and Grogu does in theaters. The Star Wars franchise is usually a safe bet, having only had one real flop. However, that flop was Solo: A Star Wars Story, which was the last Star Wars movie Disney released during the busy summer season. Currently, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of buzz around The Mandalorian and Grogu, possibly because the marketing hasn’t been very strong. But there’s still time to build excitement, and hopefully the next wave of trailers and ads will get people looking forward to it and lead to strong ticket sales.
