Though Avengers: Doomsday isn’t out until December, Marvel has already released four short trailers. These trailers focus on different heroes and teams, hinting at a huge battle that will decide the fate of the entire multiverse. We’ve gotten glimpses of Steve Rogers, Thor, the X-Men, the Wakandans, and the Fantastic Four, but a major villain, Doctor Doom, hasn’t appeared yet. Marvel is keeping Doom’s reveal a secret, choosing to showcase the heroes who will fight against him. While fans eagerly await Robert Downey Jr.’s return, promotional images from Doomsday are offering a sneak peek in the meantime.
The Avengers Updates account on X (formerly Twitter) recently posted promotional artwork for the upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday. The art is styled like a comic book cover and shows off many of the characters who will be in the film. The main focus is Doctor Doom, easily recognizable with his iconic mask. When Will We See Footage of Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday?
The promotional artwork strongly suggests that Doctor Doom will look just like he does in the Marvel comics in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. We saw similar artwork at a Disney event in China last fall, and the character looked lifted directly from the comic books. It’s great to see Marvel is committed to this accurate look for Doom, especially since previous live-action versions haven’t quite captured the character’s iconic design. With Robert Downey Jr. playing the villain, some fans worried he might not wear the mask much, but these early images show Marvel is fully embracing the classic costume.
As a longtime fan, seeing so many of the Doomsday cast reunited in this image is a real treat, but honestly, it just makes the wait for the movie feel even longer! Ever since Robert Downey Jr. was announced at Comic-Con last year, everyone’s been buzzing about his portrayal of Doom and how different it will be from Iron Man. He’s clearly a huge draw for this film, and Marvel’s smart to keep him under wraps in the trailers – building that anticipation is key. But even they can’t stay silent forever. They can’t possibly get through the entire marketing campaign without showing us some footage of Downey as Doom, and I, for one, am desperately hoping they don’t!
When the first teasers for Doomsday were released, many fans thought we’d see more than the four initially promised. That didn’t happen, but there’s growing belief that another Doomsday preview will arrive soon. Given Disney’s pattern of advertising Marvel films during the Super Bowl, a popular idea is that we’ll see a Doomsday TV spot during this year’s game, possibly featuring Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. At the same time, marketing for the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie needs to begin shortly, creating an interesting challenge for Marvel, Disney, and Sony to coordinate their advertising plans. While the Super Bowl (on February 8th) would be a great place to launch the Brand New Day teaser, using that same event to reveal Downey as Doom would create a much bigger impact.
If we don’t see a trailer for Doomsday during the Super Bowl, a good strategy would be to show a new preview before screenings of The Mandalorian and Grogu in May – similar to how Disney first promoted the teasers. While it’s unclear how well The Mandalorian and Grogu will do in theaters, it’s the first new Star Wars movie in seven years and will likely be a major summer event, guaranteeing a large audience for any Doomsday teasers. Until then, fans should keep an eye out for posters and other promotional materials, but be cautious of anything created by AI that looks like official marketing.
