The latest Star Trek series, Starfleet Academy, features a new character who carries a heavier burden than previous iterations of Worf. The show, set roughly 300 years in the future, focuses on a group of cadets shaped by a devastating galactic event known as “the Burn,” which nearly destroyed interstellar civilization. Among these compelling characters is Jay-Den Kraag, portrayed by Karim Diane.
Episode 4 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is the strongest episode yet, skillfully combining large-scale galactic events with a deeply personal look at its characters. The episode reveals a devastating blow to the Klingons: their home planet, Qo’noS, was destroyed in the Burn, bringing the entire race to the brink of extinction. This makes Jay-Den, the sole Klingon currently in Starfleet, a compelling and tragic figure, essentially a reverse of the iconic Next Generation character Worf.
Worf & Jay-Den Were Both the Only Klingons in Starfleet at their Time

Initially, the Klingons and the Federation were bitter enemies. In Star Trek: Discovery Season 1, the shadowy organization Section 31 nearly wiped out the Klingon homeworld, Qo’noS, but over time, their relationship evolved into a fragile alliance. Worf and Jay-Den represent the beginning and end of this reconciliation; Worf was one of the first Klingons to join Starfleet, while Jay-Den believed he might be the last of his kind. In one episode, Jay-Den even suggests the Federation should let the Klingon race fade away rather than compromise their values.
Worf and Jay-Den both grapple with a central dilemma: can a Klingon truly join the Federation without abandoning who they are? Worf personally faced this challenge by constantly trying to reconcile his Klingon traditions with the Federation’s values. It was a difficult path, especially as a father, but he succeeded thanks to the strong bonds he formed with his crewmates on the Enterprise and Deep Space Nine. Throughout his career, Worf often found himself in situations that demanded he choose between his two worlds, but he consistently refused to be forced into making such a decision.
Jay-Den faces an especially difficult challenge. The Klingon race is nearing collapse, and while the Federation offered help, they refused it, seeing it as a disgrace. The Klingons’ survival is incredibly uncertain, but Jay-Den knows he can’t simply make them accept assistance – that would compromise their core identity. For a positive outcome, the Klingons and the Federation must find a way to coexist within Jay-Den’s world.
The Klingons Never Truly Accepted the Federation

The fourth episode of Starfleet Academy uses flashbacks to show Jay-Den’s path to joining the Federation. These flashbacks reveal a surprising fact: the Klingons have always struggled to fully embrace membership. Their culture is naturally inclined towards isolation and resists change, and this remained true even in the 32nd century. Interestingly, this reluctance aligns with the Federation’s own principles—the Prime Directive emphasizes respecting cultures as they are, and that applies to member worlds just as much as those yet to make contact.
I’ve always loved how Jay-Den put it in that episode – the Federation loses what makes it the Federation if it tries to force the Klingons to change who they are. It really struck me how Worf and Jay-Den showed that even after something as terrible as the Burn, the Federation still held onto its core principles, like the Prime Directive. What I found so hopeful was that they didn’t try to solve the tension between the two cultures, but found a way to live with it – a balance perfectly embodied by the first Klingon in Starfleet, and even the one who believed he was the very last of his kind.
