New PlayStation Portal Reporedly Releasing in 2026

According to a recent report, Sony is planning to release an upgraded PlayStation Portal handheld device later this year. The original PS Portal, which launched in 2023, has been very popular, and there’s been talk of Sony developing a completely new handheld console potentially around the time the PS6 is released. However, before that happens, we might see an updated version of the current PS Portal in the coming months.

A reliable source on the NeoGaf forum, KeplerL2, claims Sony is planning to release an upgraded PlayStation Portal with an OLED screen in 2026. OLED screens offer better picture quality than the current Portal’s LCD screen, potentially making games look sharper and more vibrant. However, because the Portal streams games, a strong internet connection is still the biggest factor in how good a game looks. Even with an OLED screen, a poor connection could limit visual improvements by reducing the streaming quality.

The announcement didn’t share many specifics about what’s new with the PlayStation Portal. Sony might also upgrade the device’s internal components, particularly its WiFi, to improve streaming quality and fix a common problem users have been experiencing. This could lead to more reliable, higher-quality game streaming.

Although details are still emerging about a possible upgrade to the PS Portal, it’s clear the device has been a big hit for Sony. The PS Portal has reportedly sold over two million units in the US alone, exceeding Sony’s expectations. Given this success, releasing an OLED version would be a smart move to encourage those who haven’t bought one yet to do so.
