While we wait for the next season of Pluribus, which is likely two years off, fans can enjoy season 2 of Sugar on Apple TV. The show stars Colin Farrell as a private investigator in Los Angeles who uncovers a large conspiracy unfolding around him.
Both Sugar and Pluribus explore similar ideas and have a comparable visual style, but their stories don’t directly mirror each other. You could think of Hollywood in Sugar as being like the collective consciousness in Pluribus, and the character John Sugar initially resembles a character named Carol Sturka from that series. However, the connection is more about overall themes and how things look than about specific plot points.
Both shows share similar inspirations, including the classic 1956 sci-fi horror film Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and iconic TV series like The Twilight Zone and The Prisoner. As the second season of Sugar is coming soon, now is a great time for those who enjoyed Pluribus to check out its first eight episodes if they haven’t already.
What Is Sugar About?
Okay, so “Sugar” really reminded me of another film, “Pluribus,” in terms of its style and atmosphere. It centers around a private eye getting mixed up in the lives of Hollywood’s elite. The story kicks off with the disappearance of a powerful producer’s granddaughter, and honestly, it immediately brought Roman Polanski’s “Chinatown” to mind – that same classic, shadowy neo-noir vibe.
Similar to Vince Gilligan’s style, the show uses many elements common in classic noir films. But it’s much more than just a typical detective story. In fact, it feels closer to an episode of The Twilight Zone than to a film like The Big Sleep.
I have to say, Sugar is a really surprising find! If you’re an Apple TV+ subscriber and love their sci-fi shows, you absolutely need to check it out. I’ve been eagerly awaiting the return of Pluribus, and honestly, Sugar is hitting the spot while we wait – it’s a perfect substitute!
Sugar Is The Closest Show To Pluribus On Apple TV
Apple TV
When it comes to style, Apple TV+’s Sugar feels most similar to Pluribus. Both shows draw inspiration from classic science fiction television, but quickly evolve beyond simple genre labels, drawing viewers into complex and intriguing mysteries.
At the end of the first season of Sugar, things are deliberately confusing, and that’s intentional. We’re eagerly awaiting season 2 of Pluribus hoping it will shed some light on the mysterious “Joining.” Both shows probably won’t offer simple explanations, which will likely keep us hooked and wanting more.
Sugar Season 2 Can Be Even Better
After a sneak peek at Sugar season 2, fans are already excited for the next chapter of this sci-fi detective drama starring Colin Farrell. It’s scheduled to premiere on Apple TV in June 2026. The shocking cliffhanger from season 1 promises even more intriguing puzzles and mysteries in the upcoming episodes.
As a big fan of Vince Gilligan’s work, I was thrilled to hear that Tony Dalton – who I absolutely loved as Lalo Salamanca in Better Call Saul – will be joining the cast of Sugar for its second season. Apparently, though, he’ll be playing a completely different character this time around, which should be really interesting!
